To infinity and beyond with Gerflor and Glasgow Science Centre

Glasgow Science Centre flooring

The Glasgow Science Centre is an educational charity whose vision is to empower people through learning and engaging with science to make positive differences in their lives, communities and society as a whole. With over 350K unique visitors every year, the centre needed to replace the existing flooring throughout the facility with a high-quality flooring solution that would be able to handle the extensive visitor footfall.
During the most recent refurbishment at Glasgow Science Centre, international flooring specialist Gerflor would supply a mixture of their hardwearing GTI Max, Attraction® and Taralay Premium flooring that would total 1800m2 for the main Atrium, Clyde Suite reception area, Tower Base Events Space and the centre’s STEM hub Classroom, together with an area in their Design Studio.
Graham Rose, Creative Director, Glasgow Science Centre commented, “we received funding to make a number of improvements, some of which included capital works such as the flooring.” Graham Rose went on to add, “the Gerflor products had the benefits over their competitors in terms of the high technical specification and an extensive choice of contemporary colours. Being able to lay tiles over our existing sheet vinyl flooring very quickly was also another big advantage for a busy visitor attraction. The eco credentials of the Gerflor products also influenced our decision.”
Base Flooring Solutions situated in Paisley near Glasgow has been established since 2004, providing a range of residential and commercial clients with an installation service and will only use credible world class flooring solutions. John Gavin, Director, Base Flooring Solutions said, “we have been the preferred flooring contractor to the Glasgow Science Centre for many years. The flooring element of the refurbishment was a huge challenge, the facility required various shapes and designs which included diamond, squares, rectangles and circles.” He added, “Gerflor products were chosen for two primary reasons – the options available in terms of the various vibrant colours, together with their ease of installation. We specified the Gerflor GTI Max and Attraction products as we had a limited time scale for this project, this meant we were able to save preparation time by going straight onto the existing floors.”
Gerflor’s GTI Max and Attraction® ranges are a perfect solution for renovation, as both ranges come in the format of a fast track loose lay vinyl tile with interlocking edges, which allows for rapid installation and replacement. This permits the renovated area to remain open and provides a clean installation with no adhesive or dust, and also without the need for specialist tools.
A two-person team can install up to 200m² in 8 hours that is up to four times faster than most conventional tiles and can be installed on a sub floor with minimal preparation.

By installing loose-lay vinyl flooring systems, clients can benefit from limited disruption to their operations, avoid closure for the 24 hours or more needed to install traditionally adhered floorings and, importantly, minimise the loss of client profits.
The GTI Max range comes with a PUR+ surface treatment which allows for ease of maintenance. with its modular tile format available in 23 colourways. A popular choice for heavy traffic applications perfect for retail, industrial, warehousing and other contract environments.
The Attraction range comes with a Protecsol® 2 surface treatment, it also requires minimal maintenance and is a durable solution suitable for a host of sectors. The Attraction collection offers 21 colourways and 4 sub-designs allowing specifiers and designers to mix and match. In addition to the Attraction range, Gerflor also has the Attraction Premium collection which comprises of 28 on trend colours ideal for creating a unique flooring scheme.
Finally, Gerflor’s Taralay Premium sheet range is truly unique, a design-led flooring collection which delivers outstanding performance for extremely high pedestrian foot and rolling load traffic. The 100% pure homogenous wear layer provides superior abrasion and traffic resistance along with long-lasting colours. The collection includes 34 colours, incorporating 6 unique designs; Poesy which was chosen for this project, has a random terrazzo effect thanks to the pearly and metallic flake patterns used. The exhilarating designs within this collection offer designers an added spectrum of choices and effects.
Graham Rose concluded by saying, “we haven’t installed Gerflor products before but would certainly specify them moving forwards for other contract projects that require a fast turnaround and where there is no need to close the premises as part of the refurbishment.”
