A major milestone in Scottish education has been achieved with the opening of the Dunfermline Learning Campus in West Fife. Purpose-built to inspire learning, the state-of-the-art facility spans 26,666 m² and accommodates 2,700 pupils and 246 staff, making it the UK’s largest building constructed to Passivhaus standards.

Gerflor has played a key role in the project’s success, supplying over 14,000 m² of high-performance flooring solutions including Taraflex® sports flooring, DLW Marmorette Linoleum, Tarasafe Safety flooring, and Powershock 300 rubber tiles. Alongside this, Gradus accessories including stair nosings and a variety of trim finishes were also supplied, the combined package of products from both Gerflor and Gradus were specified for their exceptional durability, safety, and style to meet the needs of the various areas across the facility.

The large variety of Gerflor and Gradus products were specified for key areas throughout the school, including the games and sports halls, fitness studio, circulation areas, reception, corridors, classrooms, changing rooms, WC’s and kitchen and servery areas. The project also extended to other versatile spaces designed to support the needs of students and staff, with flooring solutions that deliver long-lasting performance, practical design, and aesthetic appeal for diverse spaces across the facility interiors.

Commenting on the project, Maggie Smith, Scotland Team Leader at Gerflor, said, “We initially had only our Olympic pedigree Taraflex sports flooring and Powershock 300 Rubber tiles specified with the architects on this project. As partners on the Framework Agreement with BAM, we collaborated closely with them to review the overall project and identify areas where cost savings could be achieved on the flooring package, which had originally been specified by another supplier. This approach allowed us to ensure the best possible outcome for both the client and the project.”

Elaborating on the specification decision, Maggie added, “At Gerflor and Gradus, we were able to offer a comprehensive flooring and accessories package that not only met the project’s functional and aesthetic requirements but also delivered significant cost efficiencies. By tailoring our solution to align with the budgetary goals without compromising on quality, we demonstrated the value of working with a supplier who can provide both innovation and cost-effectiveness.”

The responsibility for installing the flooring products and accessories for this high-profile project fell to Veitchi Flooring, one of the UK’s largest and most respected flooring contractors.

Recognised as a market leader, Veitchi Flooring has built a reputation for setting the benchmark in quality and professionalism across the industry. With headquarters in Glasgow and additional offices in Dundee and Aberdeen, Veitchi Flooring offers the capacity and flexibility to handle contracts of any scale across the UK. Their extensive expertise and specialist knowledge allow them to provide tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of each customer, ensuring exceptional results every time.

Commenting on the specification of Gerflor and Gradus products, Jamie Cargill, Contracts Supervisor at Veitchi Flooring, said, “The Dunfermline Learning Campus project was awarded through an open tender process, competing against other major flooring contractors across the UK. The client required a range of options to achieve cost savings without compromising quality. We recommended Gerflor and Gradus products because of their exceptional design appeal, durability, performance, and competitive price point … these were key factors in delivering an effective overall solution.”

Discussing the installation process, Jamie Cargill added, “Our team on site ranged from four to ten fitters, including one apprentice and a visiting supervisor. The project was completed within a fifty-week timescale, from start to finish, ensuring we met all deadlines while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship.”

The creation of Dunfermline Learning Campus has been a true collaborative effort, bringing together key stakeholders such as Fife Council, Fife College, the Scottish Government, and the Scottish Futures Trust. The project was procured and managed by hub East Central Scotland, ensuring that the campus was delivered on schedule and to the highest quality standards, meeting the needs of both the educational institutions and the local community.

Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, Jenny Gilruth, commented, “This is an important milestone for the Dunfermline Learning Campus, and I know that the new school building will be of significant benefit to pupils, teachers and the local community.” Her statement reflects the broader impact of the project, highlighting its long-term value to the educational experience and for the area as a whole.

Summing up the project Jamie Cargill ended by saying, “Veitchi, BAM construction and the client are extremely pleased with how the new school has turned out. We have used Gerflor and Gradus products in the past on many varied projects with outstanding success. We will continue to specify Gerflor and Gradus for their consistently high-quality products that excel in both performance and design.”

Not only a centre of learning excellence the building is also a great asset to the local community. The modern sports facilities are fully accessible by pupils, teachers, parents and the wider community and can accommodate the needs of both large groups and individual users alike.

Maggie Smith concluded, “The new installation of interior flooring and accessory products from Gerflor and Gradus deliver an impressive visual impact. The school has only been open a few months and the client is delighted with the final finish and overall performance of our world class products.”

With the addition of the Gerflor Winsford Warehouse in 2020/21, which boasts over half a million m² of flooring readily available on its shelves, the Dunfermline Learning Campus project benefited significantly from streamlined supply chain management. This state-of-the-art facility not only ensures an extensive stock of bestselling products but also reduces lead times and supports efficient distribution across the UK.

For the Dunfermline project, this meant having immediate access to the required flooring materials without delays, ensuring that the project timeline was met seamlessly. The strategic location of the warehouse further enhanced logistical efficiency, enabling quick and reliable delivery to the site. By leveraging the scale and capability of Winsford’s operations, Gerflor demonstrated its ability to handle large-scale projects with precision and consistency, reinforcing its reputation for excellence in supply chain management.

When Kings College Sixth Form School, a Somerset-based private school decided on a large flooring upgrade and refurbishment, they very wisely settled on the suggested specification from Rud Sawers Architects...

When Kings College Sixth Form School, a Somerset-based private school decided on a large flooring upgrade and refurbishment, they very wisely settled on the suggested specification from Rud Sawers Architects Ltd, their appointed architect. This would include a combination of world class flooring products from international flooring and interior specialists Gerflor. The project would comprise a combination of Gerflor’s Urban Myth Carpet Tiles from Gradus for Classrooms, Creation 55 LVT for the Reception and Stairways, and Tarasafe Impression safety flooring for WC facilities, alongside a selection of Gradus accessories, including BasicZ Stair Edging and Boulevard 7000 Matting for the education facility. The overall project would ultimately see 800m2 of new flooring installed.

King’s College in Taunton, Somerset is an independent co-educational boarding and day school offering places to pupils from ages thirteen to eighteen. The school occupies a secluded and beautiful site of over 80 acres on the south side of Taunton, and just a few minutes from the town centre. The main building is an outstanding example of nineteenth-century architecture, with the entire site, a mixture of traditional and modern buildings. As well as an academic programme of robust subjects, there is a multitude of sports and co-curricular activities available that are popular across all age groups. The school provides inspired teaching, superb facilities, and the nurturing of individual potential, combines to create an environment in which young people achieve remarkable things. The outstanding modern facilities and stunning location ensure that children enjoy a challenging all-round education in a progressive, secure, and stimulating environment.

The renovation project provides a new, contemporary, low energy 6th Form, set within the historic learning environment of Kings College. The building accommodates a burgeoning programme of education and life skills, to make King’s College an even more attractive option for their 16+ pupils. The building is modern, flexible, inspiring, technologically advanced, sympathetic to new learning strategies and anchored in sustainable energy principles.

The Gerflor Specification Sales Manager at the time of the installation, Chris Pursey said, “Rud Sawers Architects initially specified Creation 55 LVT for the reception and stairways but approached Gerflor to discuss other areas within the project. The Architect, Rud Sawers Architects Ltd found it beneficial to speak with us about the whole project including carpet tiles, safety flooring and flooring accessories, together with stair edgings and entrance matting. Specifying Gerflor and also Gradus throughout the project, saved considerable time compared with dealing with multiple manufacturers, and the client was extremely pleased with the vast range of products to choose from within our portfolio.”

Totnes-based architects Rud Sawers has a simple design philosophy which is to transform project constraints into positive opportunities that produce inventive, unique, and beautiful buildings. Their practice has been steadily building a reputation for its exciting contemporary yet sensitive design approach and offer a full range of architectural design services.

Rud Sawers, Director, Rud Sawers Architects Ltd commented, “In 2016, Rud Sawers Architects (RSA) won a design competition to design a new Arts building on the site. This was completed in 2018 and was received very positively by the client and the pupils. We were invited, alongside other architects to compete for a new commission to design a new Sixth Form building. We were selected as the Architect and enjoy a very positive professional relationship with the school.”

On specification Rud Sawers went on to further say, “The Gerflor and Gradus products we specified, were fit for purpose and available in attractive finishes that perfectly suited the visual identity we were trying to create for the educational establishment. We specified Gerflor flooring for the ground floor, first floor and second floor of the building.”

Commenting further on the project Rud Sawers said, “The real challenge however with this project, was working through the Covid Pandemic, maintaining construction momentum and meeting the brief for carbon Net Zero operations head on, which we achieved with a great degree of success.”

The installation of the considerable amount of Gerflor flooring and Gradus Accessory products would need to be of the highest standards, as set by both the school and the architect. The delivery of the final outcome would be the responsibility of Bristol-based Gollop Contract Flooring.

Started in 1981, Gollop Contract Flooring are a successful family-run Bristol business specialising in commercial flooring installation. They pride themselves on delivering exceptional service to clients, both existing and new. With over 40 years of experience, they specialise in providing the very best of commercial flooring and employ in excess of 50 operatives and staff. During their many years of trading, experience and service has enabled the company to provide cost-effective solutions to any flooring project along with the deserved reputation and professional quality of their staff and workmanship from skilled craftsmen.

Matt Donovan, Contracts Manager, Gollop Flooring commented, “We have worked in partnership with CG Fry the contractors on several projects and this was one of several projects, where we had been awarded the flooring package. The Gerflor and Gradus products that we installed were specified by the Architect Rud Sawers.”

On specification, Matt Donovan went on to further comment, “The overall project was approximately 800m2 which included a mixture of Gerflor Honey Oak LVT, Gradus Graphite & Peridot carpet tiles and Gerflor Brescia Tarasafe Impression safety vinyl. Part of the building was on a concrete base and other sections on a timber base, which required different preparation works to ensure correct installation of all the flooring products.”

On installation Matt Donovan added, “Our lead fitter Jamie Hook did a remarkable job on the installation and working with the site team over a period of six weeks.”

Matt Donovan concluded, “This was an iconic project to be involved with. Every flooring installation can have its unique challenges but overall, this one was extremely straightforward to lay, thanks to the technologically advanced solutions that were specified.

I understand the building is now in full use and the new Gerflor flooring and Gradus accessory products are performing very well. We work with Gerflor and Gradus on many projects and consider them to be some of the best manufacturers in the industry.”

Rob Walker, Gerflor Specification Sales Manager, who worked with the Installer to manage the project concluded by saying, “The client is extremely pleased with the overall finished result. It was a notable project to work on and be involved with, and being able to supply a wide range of elite flooring and interior solutions that met the required brief was always our end goal for the client. The education establishment is future proofed for many years to come.”

In conclusion Rud Sawers commented, “We are delighted with the final result, the specified flooring and accessory products are performing extremely well, providing a robust and easily maintainable flooring solution for the hardworking school. We would definitely choose Gerflor and Gradus again, as they have delivered a high-quality range of products, which are equally matched by their excellent specification and customer service.”

The Nantgarw student Campus is part of Coleg y Cymoedd (College of the Valleys) in Wales. When the Nantgarw campus required a fast refurbishment of their Library, they turned to international flooring specialist Gerflor to supply Gradus Carpets for the much-used library. This successful renovation, then resulted in the specification of a vast selection of other Gerflor products for other areas of the campus. Some of which included their Olympic pedigree Taraflex sports flooring for the main sports hall, Tarasafe Safety Vinyl Flooring for changing rooms and corridors, Powershock Tiles for the gym and Gradus Barrier Matting for the reception and entrance areas.

Coleg y Cymoedd was formed in 2013, following the merger of The College Ystrad Mynach and Coleg Morgannwg. Over 10,000 learners’ study at Coleg y Cymoedd each year. The college offers a wide range of Full and Part Time courses from Entry to Degree Level in over 15 Curriculum areas. The college has invested significantly in its facilities in recent years, with standout projects including the Nantgarw Campus building (a £40 million award winning campus).

Commenting on the project Tony Thorne, Specification Manager, Gerflor, South Wales said, “Carpet Services are a well-known flooring contractor in Wales. who I visit regularly to review and discuss projects with as well as new pipeline opportunities.” Tony Thorne added, “I went to see Carpet Services and was in the right place at the right time with the discussion focusing on the library refurbishment of the Nantgarw student Campus. The client wanted to replace the flooring in the library, and required a floorcovering that would match their black and green colour scheme. The recommendation was to use Streetwise Design with Emphasis, and Stratus as a flooring solution which the client was delighted with.”

Tony Thorne also said, “Whilst the initial requirement was for approximately 300m2 flooring for the library, the end user was so pleased with the final result they chose to work with Gerflor and Carpet Services for other areas of the refurbishment programme across the entire campus.”

The Nantgarw student Campus project provided Gerflor with the perfect platform to showcase a raft of other high-quality flooring solutions ideal for the demands of the modern-day education environment. The project would amount to an immense 5300m2 of Gerflor products being specified for not only the library, but also the communal areas, changing rooms and their sports hall.
The design and specification of the Nantgarw Sports Centre of Excellence would fall to Cardiff-based architects Austin-Smith: Lord, who provide award-winning Architectural, Interior Design and Landscape Design services across multiple sectors across the UK. They have a growing portfolio of refurbishment work in the education sector, spearheaded by their growing specialist team of Interior Designers.

Jonanthan Jones, Associate at Austin- Smith: Lord commented, “We have a long-standing and successful relationship with the College, having previously designed a new campus for them in Aberdare and also helped them to re-purpose and improve much of their existing campus in Ystrad Mynach. The College were keen to explore what was possible on a prominent parcel of land to the south of the existing Nantgarw campus, with a view to creating a high quality, flagship sports facility, and engaged us and Mott MacDonald Project Management to complete a feasibility study. The study was greatly assisted by our UK-wide experience in the Further Education and Sports sectors, not least the recently completed Forge project for Coleg Sir Gar.”

On specification Jonathan Jones said, “We originally specified Gerflor for the sports hall flooring, given their proven quality and range of products to suit a variety of requirements when it comes to sports vinyl, and we have delivered several other successful projects, where we have specified Gerflor’s Taraflex indoor sports surface. The black sports flooring was selected as it complimented the overall concept, providing a striking feature in the main sports space and appeared in our very earliest Twin motion visualisations and flythroughs, which captured the enthusiasm of the client and stakeholders. With the internal colour scheme based around the college’s colours of greens, teals, greys, and blacks, we saw an opportunity to combine that and reflect the external black cladding in the sports hall floor, creating a bold contrast with the teal walls, and coloured sports line markings.”

The installation of such prestigious and large flooring project would be the responsibility of Carpet Services Flooring, Cardiff. The company is a leader in contract commercial flooring and domestic flooring, and it is a family run business, which prides itself on its delivering exceptionally high standards of service, quality products and affordable prices.

For the Sports Centre of Excellence (which is a new build), Carpet Services installed 720m2 of Taraflex Performance in ‘Black’, 90m2 of Powershock 300 Gym Tile and 400m2 of Tarasafe Ultra ‘Opal’ in corridors and changing rooms. The installation would also supply flooring for the main college building refurbishment which would include Gradus Stratus ‘Jetstream’ on multiple floors and corridors, together with classrooms, library, and office with pockets of Gradus Streetwise in ‘Green,’ ‘Orange’ and ‘Blue’ along with Gradus Emphasis Loop in the same Green, Orange and Blue on separate floors. To date the project has used approximately 4000m2 of Gradus Stratus and 300m2 of Gradus Streetwise. Other areas of the college that would benefit from Gerflor and Gradus products would be the wood-working area where 100m2 of Gerflor’s’ Tarasafe Ultra safety flooring in ‘Granite’ would be used, together with 100m2 of Gradus Boulevard Stripe matting in 1Raven1 and 100m2 of Boulevard 6000 in ‘Nightfall’.

Commenting on specification and products Ray Gallivan, Contract Manager at Carpet Services said, “We have already had ongoing work from the college and have ourselves specified and installed Gerflor for many years. They are extremely helpful and provide an excellent product portfolio of flooring products.” On the actual installation itself, Ray Gallivan further added, “We had two fitters which makes up one team which is then bolstered with extra teams as required. The installation began at the end of May which meant that we would be ready and completed for the new term which was on the 2nd of September. All the Gerflor and Gradus flooring products that we used were extremely easy to lay as they are fantastic products to work with.”

Tony Thorne concluded by saying, “This project is so prestigious that we have entered it into the ‘Refurbishment of the Year’ award at Education Estates Magazine.
Very simply, this award recognises either a school, college or university refurbishment project that has made a difference to the educational or research experience. In our opinion the Nantgarw student Campus project delivers on all the criteria that the judges will be looking for which includes the overall quality of design and manufacturing, which is extremely high, as is the client engagement and their satisfaction with the service and solution they received.”

In conclusion Ray Gallivan said, “The Gerflor flooring products that were specified for this iconic project are really meeting the high standards required for the end user. We would continue to use Gerflor on a weekly basis. The final result at the college is extremely impressive.”

On client expectations, Jonathan Jones ended by saying, “The Gerflor flooring products specified are absolutely meeting the high specifications set for the education project and client’s brief. The main circulation spaces were actually a last-minute alteration to the Gerflor products, and so to achieve the performance and appearance requirements with their alternatives in such a short space of time was absolutely vital to us. Again, the monochromatic palette is accentuated by the subtle concrete effect, providing a high-quality finish to all vinyl spaces. We would definitely specify Gerflor again. The sports hall especially looks fantastic with the diffuse light and silhouettes reflected off the black vinyl, so we are incredibly delighted with the final finish. “

When Collegiate School in Bristol wanted to refurbish their main sports hall, together with revamping the stairs, showers and changing rooms they would specify a mix of high-quality flooring from international flooring specialist Gerflor. The specification would include Gerflor’s Olympic pedigree Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring and their world-class Tarasafe Ultra and Tarasafe Ultra H20 safety flooring.

Collegiate has an impressive sporting legacy, unsurprising given their outstanding on-site sports facilities that are truly unique to Bristol. Their strong sporting tradition is at the heart of everyday school life, encouraging everyone regardless of age and sporting ability to get more involved in physical education. It is a strongly held belief that exercise, and playing sports is important to maintain a healthy mind and it also allows each pupil to develop self-esteem and a strong team spirit. Their main sports hall has a multi-purpose goal and can be set up to provide badminton courts, cricket nets, a netball court, volleyball courts, a basketball court or five a side football pitch. In addition to this, the entire hall can be used for martial arts, dance classes or other similar classes.

Choosing the highest quality indoor sports replacement floor would be paramount to the ongoing success of their main sports hall facility. The changing rooms and showering areas in many educational locations can often be wet and slippery environments and this is where the Tarasafe Ultra and Tarasafe Ultra H20 safety collections were the ideal solutions for Collegiate School.

The Tarasafe products would also provide the perfect choice for the school’s stairs offering pupils, staff and visitors the required safety and comfort needed at the education establishment. Commenting on the instigation of the project Simon Crossman, Director of Facilities, Collegiate said, “The sports hall was nearly forty years old and the cost to build a new hall was too expensive, therefore a full refurbishment was chosen.” Simon Crossman went on to add, “Originally the refurb was to concentrate on the lights, ventilation and heating and hot water and replace the floor. On M&E refurb projects, it can be hard to see where the money has been spent, consequently the floor was to be a key visual sign for the parents that we had refurbished the hall.”

On specification Simon Crossman went on to further comment, “We wanted a bright multi-sport surface and a surface which could cope with ad-hoc school activities such as assemblies, prizegivings and summer/leavers balls. Therefore, the floor had to be resilient, take the point loading of a high heel or a chair and not dent or deform in any way which could affect the playing surface. Another requirement was to have an indoor cricket area which didn’t involve laying additional mats. The Taraflex® indoor sports solution delivers this specification in spades.”

Chris Pursey, Gerflor Area Sales Manager, Southwest & Channel Islands commented, “The collection of Gerflor ranges used on this project were specified by Quattro Design Architects, who chose Taraflex® in colour Lagoon for the main playing area with a run-off border in Gold which looks very striking. The specifier only wanted the best-in-class solution for the facility, and it needed to meet the various requirements for the end user”.

The installation of the Gerflor products would have to be of the highest standard to meet the rigorous specification requirements and would be the responsibility of Bristol-based Knighton Contracts. Knighton Contracts are specialist in commercial flooring providing solutions to many of the UK’s leading construction contractors, providing a reliable, trustworthy, and efficient flooring service for a host of projects for over forty years. Lee Knighton, Director commented, “The project initially came to us from the contractors KP Wilton with the specification coming from Quattro Design.”

On installation, Lee Knighton said, “We had absolutely no problems laying down the Gerflor Taraflex® and Tarasafe products and everybody seemed extremely delighted with the final finish of the new flooring installed.” Commenting on the performance of the new flooring Simon Crossman also added, “The floor has now been down for over a year and is the significant wow factor in this critical refurbishment. The parents and visitors all comment on how remarkable it looks. We have also had great support in understanding how to remove cricket ball marks from the floor. Chris Pursey, from Gerflor, has been really helpful in providing technical support and sourcing the correct cleaning products to help maintain the high quality appearance of the floor.”

Lee Knighton finally said, “We would definitely choose to specify and install Gerflor products again. The new Gerflor sports surface and safety flooring looks really superb. We also found that Gerflor provided high quality assistance right throughout the project. From enquiry through to delivery, their Area Specification Manager ‘Chris Pursey’ provided outstanding levels of customer service and technical and specification advice.”

On final outcomes Chris Pursey added, “The client is incredibly happy with the final finish and performance of their new Taraflex® sports floor, particularly as the hall is used regularly for indoor cricket. It’s been a rewarding project to be involved in, as we were able to supply the total flooring solutions they were seeking.”

In conclusion Simon Crossman said, “The whole project has been a fantastic success with the floor being the most visual part. Eye catching and dramatic has been the final result.” Taraflex® indoor sports surfaces overview Taraflex® Performance easily meets the rigorous demands of vast array of sports activities providing excellent co-efficient of friction, this means twists, turns, stops/starts can be carried out without fear of slipping or gripping and subsequent injuries. The shock absorption qualities of Taraflex® Performance also helps players gain even more enjoyment from sport.

With a complete range of shock absorption P1/P2/P3, Taraflex® sports floorings from Gerflor provide the right solution every time and optimal safety for users. The combination of D-Max™/D-Max™+, CXP™HD foam ensures that Taraflex® sports floorings are durable and high-performing. Taraflex® also meets the EN 14904 Standard which is the minimum performance requirements to be met by indoor sports floors.

Its objective is to draw attention to the necessity of installing safe, comfortable floors that reduce the risk of injuries. Taraflex® technology delivers long-lasting high-performance of the products for the lifetime of the floors…a massive boon when long-term planning and budgeting are perceived as being two key considerations for specifiers.

Taraflex® sports flooring has been fitted at every Olympic Games since 1976. Approved by many National and International governing bodies as a world class sports surface, it is also widely installed within the education, community, leisure, health, and fitness sectors. Taraflex® is ideal for new build projects and refurbishments and is extremely durable and cost effective to maintain.

Over 6 million children everyday enjoy the benefits of Taraflex® sports flooring as it delivers a versatile range that can be used for various multi-specialist applications. Taraflex® Performance is available in 17 colours and 3 wood-effect designs as standard with an addition of 110 solid colour options available. It offers a P2 category shock absorbency of 35% to 45% and is also treated with the Triple Action Protecsol® surface treatment so that no polish is ever required for the lifetime of the floor.

Tarasafe safety flooring overview Intended for traditional barefoot spaces where there are continuous wet areas, Tarasafe Ultra H20 also offers a shod solution, providing a perfect blend of flooring applications for those areas where wet flooring conditions can be an issue. Within Gerflor’s other top performing Tarasafe vinyl safety flooring range there are over 80 finishes available to choose from.

They are reinforced with a glass fibre grid and are suitable for use in all areas of heavy traffic where slip-resistance, durability and hygienic conditions are required. Using mineral crystal particles, rather than carborundum, Tarasafe, with its improved performance, is easier to install, lighter and more flexible to handle. The range has a maximum hygiene rating meeting the EN Standard 22196 for anti- bacterial activity (E. coli – S. aureus – MRSA) (3) returning >99% levels of growth inhibition and comes with a 12-year warranty and is also 100% recyclable.

The Tarasafe Standard range comes with the unique UV cured PUR surface treatment and their Tarasafe Ultra range (excluding their Tarasafe Ultra H20 offer) also sees a benefit from the SparClean® surface treatment, therefore no polish for life.

When two top-performing Wakefield schools needed to source high quality flooring for their sports halls they turned to international flooring specialist Gerflor to supply 1300m2 of their world class Taraflex®...

When two top-performing Wakefield schools needed to source high quality flooring for their sports halls they turned to international flooring specialist Gerflor to supply 1300m2 of their world class Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring, together with 1350m2 of Isolsport isolating membrane to complete the refurbishment project. The transformation was completed and the client is delighted with the refurbishment.

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School for boys (QEGS) and Wakefield Girl’s School, Wakefield are both something of academic legends.

As one of a family of three schools that make up the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation. At QEGS, ‘sport for all’ is a principle they live and breathe every day. At every level of sport at QEGS, pupils are encouraged to wear the crest and live the values and this philosophy has helped the school to develop an enviable reputation for sporting excellence, with individual and team successes ranging from county to national honours. Countless opportunities for sport exist both within and outside the curriculum and within QED for all ages, interests and abilities, forming an integral part of school life. All pupils can get involved either individually or as part of a team in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Climbing, Cricket, Cross-Country, Fencing, Fitness Training, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Mountain Biking, Rugby, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.

Similarly, at Wakefield Girls High School (which is part of the same foundation) sport is deemed for everyone, whatever their standard. It’s about the joy of being part of a team, learning critical team working and leadership skills, developing courage and resilience, building an appreciation of fair play, developing a healthy, active lifestyle and giving everyone the freedom to discover and play their favourite sports. After all, the best sportspeople in the world never knew what they were good at, until they gave it a go.

So, it’s no wonder that specifying a sports floor for both schools that could deliver both outstanding performance, comfort and high levels of safety for all users regardless of their ages, and sporting ability would be top of their agenda.

Wayne Andrews, Gerflor Sports Manager North UK said, “I made contact with their Estates department the previous year and they initially required some repairs to the existing granwood floor, so I put them in touch with a local contractor and this issue was temporarily resolved. During this time, we built up a good working relationship and kept in touch.

The following year, it became apparent that a refurbishment was required and a new Olympic pedigree indoor sports surface would enhance the facility even further.

Kent Oliver Estates Manager at Queen Elizabeth Grammar Wakefield said, “We had an urgent need to refurbish our Boys’ and Girls’ tired granwood main sports hall flooring. We engaged with a number of Gerflor’s previous clients, who could not speak highly enough of the quality products installed and the fantastic levels of service provided by the Specification and Technical teams.”

On making the decision to specify Gerflor flooring, Kent Oliver went on to say, “We were in search of a surface that was ideal for a variety of sports. Offering a good level of shock absorption, minimising the force of impact on the body, and reducing long term injury risk. We are delighted with the final results. The surfaces are better performing than the granwood and offer a lot more protection than the previous flooring. Both floors installed are of the highest quality with a superior finish to them.”

On specification, Wayne Andrews also commented,” We proposed an Isolsport overlay with Taraflex Performance onto the existing granwood floor, this provided a robust solution avoiding high labour costs that would be incurred from the uplifting of the existing granwood floor and also any sub floor preparation costs. The boys and girls sports halls are used by professional players for a wide variety of sports.”

The fitting of the new Gerflor sports floor would be undertaken by one of the country’s leading installers of sports floors. Stockport-based Recreational Coatings Limited has over 30 years’ experience of installing sports surfaces in various prestigious events some of which include the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, World and European events throughout the UK and beyond.

Jed Hill, its Managing Director said, “with a strong reputation to uphold, the school entrusted our team here at Recreational Coatings Limited to overlay the existing granwood floor with a new, high-performance, cushioned surface.” Jed Hill added, “The school had taken the time to find out more about other local Taraflex® installations in other eeducation establishments. Gerflor’s Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring ticked all the boxes for its sport and multi-use requirements. Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring can be specified for a wide range of sporting applications and leisure activities. It has excellent safety, comfort and performance qualities, as well as being available in vibrant colours and realistic wood designs, thus it’s an ideal solution for a vast array of areas.”

Wayne Andrews concluded by saying, “The client is extremely pleased with the final installation. A number of Gerflor people were involved, right from the Specification Team through to high level management who all agreed how important and unique this project was. Kent Oliver, the Estates Manager at the school was very impressed with the service received from Gerflor. In addition to this the impact protection and playability of Taraflex was a big talking point for him.”

Kent Oliver ended by saying, “We would definitely specify Gerflor again. The performance and appearance has surpassed our expectations and we have received nothing but positive feedback from the schools, and other sports hall users. I would also like to add that Wayne Andrews from Gerflor was very knowledgeable and professional during our initial meetings and throughout the entire project.”

A school in Scotland that supports and accommodates 190 pupils with additional needs has been built to deliver an education environment worthy of its staff and students. ‘Carrongrange’ which is an Additional Support Needs (ASN) school in Grangemouth is now open, providing a raft of support to further enhance the learning and future of its pupils.

When Falkirk Council required flooring for this education project they would turn to international flooring specialist Gerflor to supply 4000m2 of flooring products that could deliver stunning looks, durability and performance.

Jack Aitken, Education Design Co-ordinator, Falkirk Council commented, “A need was identified for a replacement of our existing Additional Support Needs secondary school. The new facility in Grangemouth has been designed to meet the current range of very specific pupil needs”. On specification Jack Aitken added, “Falkirk Council have used Gerflor on a number of school projects in the past and the products have been very well received on each occasion”.

You would be hard pushed to find a head teacher who is prouder of her school than Gillian Robertson. The head of Carrongrange High School loves every aspect of the new additional support needs learning facility located in Grangemouth. It was built over the course of 18 months to replace Larbert’s Carrongrange School. “The total floor area is actually the same as the Larbert school, but the layout and colours of the flooring here makes you feel it’s so much bigger” she said.

The pupils themselves also had a hand in designing the badge for the new school, and by using Gerflor’s water jet cutting system could have their new logo incorporated into Gerflor’s Mipolam Elegance flooring.

Jack Aitken went on to further say, “The new school only opened in August this year, and the flooring is performing really well. The staff and pupils are very happy with the Gerflor products, particularly the cushioned flooring in the gym”.

The flooring area to be covered at Carrongrange High School was a huge challenge and easily met by Gerflor who provided a range of fantastic products from their vast arsenal of wide-ranging flooring solutions. The flooring specification would need to include; wet rooms, changing rooms, corridors, classrooms and offices. The vast cornucopia of products supplied would consist of Gerflor’s award-winning Taralay Impression Control safety flooring, together with their Tarasafe Ultra and Tarasafe Ultra H2O.

With over-70 years’ experience Gerflor has honed their expertise in safety flooring to produce the highest standards possible. Gerflor won the 2016 CFJ/CFA Product of the Year category with their Taralay Impression Control safety flooring range.

The Taralay Impression Control flooring collection is the perfect option where high volumes of footfall are expected. A multi-purpose floorcovering available in 2m sheet format with a Group T wear rating, it’s ideal for a host of environments where slip resistance is a must. Available as a dual collection: – ‘Safety in Wood’ and ‘Safety in Design’, the range includes realistic woods in contemporary colours and modern all over designs. Taralay Impression Control also has a Pendulum Test value +36, meets HSE guidelines (BS 7976-2), a surface roughness of >20 RTM-RZ and R11 ramp test value (DIN 51130), together with providing 24 design-led colourways. Taralay Impression Control also offers a hygienic solution thanks to a revolutionary UV cured PUR surface treatment for easy cleaning and maintenance. With the Protecsol® Control surface treatment it’s easy to clean and is 100% recyclable.

Changing rooms and showering areas in many educational locations can often be wet and slippery environments and that’s where Tarasafe Ultra H2O from Gerflor is the ideal solution. Intended for traditional barefoot spaces where there are continuous wet areas, Tarasafe Ultra H2O also offers a shod solution, providing a perfect blend of flooring applications for those areas where wet flooring conditions can be an issue.

Within Gerflor’s other top performing Tarasafe vinyl safety flooring range there are over 80 finishes available to choose from. They are reinforced with a glass fibre grid and are suitable for use in all areas of heavy traffic where slip-resistance, durability and hygienic conditions are required. Using mineral crystal particles, rather than the industry standard carborundum, Tarasafe, with its improved performance, is easier to install, lighter and more flexible to handle. The range has a maximum hygiene rating meeting the EN Standard 22196 for anti- bacterial activity (E. coli – S. aureus – MRSA) (3) returning >99% levels of growth inhibition and comes with a 12-year warranty and is also 100% recyclable. The Tarasafe Standard range comes with the unique UV cured PUR surface treatment and their Tarasafe Ultra range (excluding their Tarasafe Ultra H2O offer) also sees a benefit from the SparClean® surface treatment, therefore no polish for life.

This massive flooring project would also highlight that Gerflor are easily able to supply differing products for a wide range of applications. The Carrongrange development would also specify Gerflor’s GTI MAX and Mipolam SD products to further complete the huge overall flooring requirement.

Jack Aitken concluded by saying, “We would be very happy to use Gerflor products on future school projects”.

Built on the site of the old Myerscough Hall, some six miles north of Preston, Myerscough College is a Higher and Further Education college dating back to the 19th century.

The college itself sets extremely high standards when it comes to their curriculum and the results they expect from both staff and students alike. Therefore, it’s no surprise that when new flooring had to be installed they would turn to international flooring specialists Gerflor to supply the quality, design and durability they were seeking. It would be a task perfectly suited to Gerflor’s high-performing Taralay Impression Control and Tarasafe safety flooring ranges.

The ultimate responsibility for the actual installation would fall to Chorley-based CRT Flooring Specialists Ltd in Lancashire. CRT Flooring are a professional, commercial and domestic flooring contractor who pride themselves in delivering high quality workmanship and excellent levels of professional service for every installation they undertake. Managing Director Chris Turner commented, “the project at Myerscough College in Preston went really well. We specified Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Control for corridors which, as we predicted, would experience heavy volumes of student traffic, so this was a perfect choice as it’s a Group T rated product which means it will wear very well”.

Chris Turner went on to further add, “The Taralay Impression Control Compact product installed in a wood design effect looked stunning. It’s a top-performing product that’s got a fantastic pedigree which is why we chose it. Its R11 slip resistance qualities are right at the top of the performance category, which is crucial for any area with the risk of slips or falls. It’s a great looking product, as the wood effect looks extremely realistic and it’s also very easy to clean.”

With over-70 years’ experience, Gerflor’s expertise in safety flooring that delivers the highest standards of safety and durability is second to none. Gerflor won the 2016 CFJ/CFA Product of the Year category with their Taralay Impression Control safety flooring range. No easy task!

This safety flooring collection is the perfect option for education new builds and refurbishments where high volumes of footfall are expected. A multi-purpose floorcovering available in 2m sheet format with a Group T wear rating, it’s ideal for a host of heavy traffic environments where slip resistance is a must. Available as a dual collection: – ‘Safety in Wood’ and ‘Safety in Design’, the range includes realistic woods in contemporary colours and modern all over designs. Taralay Impression Control also offers a hygienic solution thanks to a revolutionary UV cured PUR surface treatment for easy cleaning and maintenance. With the Protecsol® Control surface treatment it’s easy to clean, is 100% recyclable, offering a state-of-the-art flooring solution for a myriad of education applications.

Chris Turner further said, “we also specified the Tarasafe Ultra H20 safety flooring range because it does exactly what Gerflor says it does. Great slip resistance in the wet, either with or without shoes. Again, it looked brilliant when it was laid down.”

Changing rooms and showering areas in many colleges, schools or universities can often be wet and slippery environments and that’s where Tarasafe Ultra H20 from Gerflor is the ideal solution. Intended for traditional barefoot spaces where there are continuous wet areas, Tarasafe Ultra H²O also offers a shod solution, providing a perfect blend of flooring applications for those areas where wet flooring conditions can be an issue.

Tarasafe is a hugely popular choice for a host of education environments where slip resistance needs to be maintained.

Chris Turner finally commented, “There’s no doubt that Gerflor products are not the most expensive on the market, but they do deliver exactly what they say. In fact, they’re good, if not better than some other manufacturers who charge a lot more.”

Reading and the loaning of books from libraries in Scotland has been in some decline. However, the Scottish Government places great importance on public libraries and believes everyone should have access to library services. In 2016 the Scottish Government allocated £450,000 to support Scottish libraries.

Nicola Sturgeon, The First Minister recently launched her Reading Challenge which encourages children to read more across all of Scotland. By providing this financial ‘page-turner’ it seems the usage of libraries is happily on the increase.

Denny library lies on the cusp of the ancient Scottish town of Falkirk. It’s a haven for all things literary. It’s a vital spoke in the daily wheel of the town’s activities and would see a benefit from a recent regeneration project. The building works would be handled by Clark Contracts Ltd who were the main contractor constructing ten retail units and the new Denny library. The final flooring installation would fall to local firm RJM Flooring.

RJM Flooring carry out commercial soft flooring throughout Scotland and the north of England and have carried out projects in Ireland and Amsterdam. Glasgow-based RJM Flooring are now one of the more established flooring contractors in Scotland, supplying high levels of quality installations. In providing a quality finish for the Denny Library RJM Flooring would need a manufacturer to provide a superior class of flooring products. The project would be a perfect fit for international flooring and interiors specialist Gerflor.

David Brady, Contracts Director, RJM Flooring commented, “most of our works were carried out in the new main library by using Gerflor Creation 70 LVT, together with Gerflor Tarasafe Standard for all the back of house WC areas and stores”. David Brady went on to further say, “The Junior Library was one room that had to have an increased level of design elements to make it work visually. Gerflor Taralay Impression Comfort proved to be the perfect choice, as it created the look of a pond surrounded by sand and rock features”.

With over 70 years’ experience Gerflor offer designers a superb range of stunningly beautiful luxury vinyl tile (LVT) solutions with their Creation collection. This amazing range won the 2017 CFJ/CFA Product of the year and their Creation 70 product scooped the coveted Red Dot Design award last year, which is akin to receiving a ‘Design Oscar’. With a collection of vibrant modern designs Creation 70 is a designer’s dream, providing a tough and durable solution and is available in 58 spectacular designs. Equally stunning in looks is Gerflor’s Creation 55 which is a perfect match for moderate traffic areas. This striking trio of LVT flooring products also includes their Creation 30 which is a new design-orientated luxury vinyl tile for the residential markets. The sophisticated Creation 70 range offers a brand-new palette of realistic wood and mineral finishes in tile and plank formats with beveled edges. In addition to this, the looselay Clic System’s unique vertical interlocking format allows this product to be laid quickly over most existing surfaces, with no need to close premises during refurbishments saving customers time and money. The Creation 70 LVT range is a popular choice for contract applications delivering a wide stunning selection of remarkable traditional, contemporary, modern wood and mineral designs. The Creation range is manufactured using the embossing process to achieve a realistic and natural look which is ideal for a host of inspirational and hardworking places. The Creation 70 range is also 100% recyclable, REACH compliant and is treated with PUR+ surface treatment, providing excellent cleaning characteristics and improved resistance to scratching. With the Creation LVT range from Gerflor the design possibilities are endless.

William Marshall, Senior Design Officer (Architect), Falkirk Council said, “Gerflor offer a wide variety of great quality solutions. I was looking for robustness, continuity and visual appearance in the flooring.” He went on to further add, “I have used Gerflor products before and Gerflor themselves are extremely easy and professional to deal with. I would certainly specify them again for future projects”.

David Brady further added, “With the size of our company we feel that we can give our clients a close personnel service; from tendering, procuring the contracts, on-site works, through to completion and handover”.

Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Comfort range which featured so heavily in the Denny Junior Library was a huge success due to its ability to deliver bespoke designs that can really make a room or themed environment come alive. The new 2017 collection displays a wide palette of 21 designs and colours. It’s an amazing array of choices conducive to creating tailor-made spaces; from classical to contemporary and bright, or welcoming and warm. The Taralay Impression Comfort range from Gerflor is a multi-layered vinyl floor covering reinforced with glass fibre and a printed design that is protected by a transparent wearlayer of either 0.70 mm or 0.90 mm. It offers a 19dB sound insulation and an indentation resistance of 0.08 mm. The flooring is equipped with the brand new Protecsol® 2, patented surface treatment from Gerflor obtained by UV laser cross-linking, offering the best chemical resistance to the main products used in healthcare environments including; betadine, eosin, hydro alcoholic solutions. This treatment avoids applying any acrylic emulsion throughout the lifetime of the product saving on cleaning time and money as it reduces water and detergent consumption.

The Tarasafe vinyl safety flooring range is available in over 80 finishes and is reinforced with a glass fibre grid, suitable for use in all areas of heavy traffic where slip-resistance, durability and hygienic conditions are required. Using mineral crystal particles, rather than the industry standard carborundum, Tarasafe, with its improved performance, is easier to install, lighter and more flexible to handle. The range has a maximum hygiene rating meeting the EN Standard 22196 for anti- bacterial activity (E. coli – S. aureus – MRSA) (3) returning >99% levels of growth inhibition and comes with a 12-year warranty. Tarasafe is stain and chemical resistant and comes with the unique SparClean® surface treatment thus no polish for life. Tarasafe is a hugely popular choice for a host of environments; education, healthcare, leisure, hospitality, housing and in any applications, that require slip resistance to be maintained.

David Brady finally said, “We are constantly using Gerflor products on many of our sites and would be very happy to keep installing them as they are easy to work with and the finished look is fantastic.”
