Today’s fitness environments are expected to deliver far more than rows of equipment and functional workout zones. Modern gyms, leisure centres and wellness clubs are increasingly designed as destinations that support physical health, mental wellbeing and community connection.

As member expectations continue to evolve, design has become a key differentiator. Operators are now focused on creating spaces that feel welcoming, inclusive and motivating, environments where people want to spend time, return regularly and feel part of a wider wellness community.

From acoustics and hygiene through to comfort underfoot and visual identity, every design decision contributes to the overall member experience. Flooring, in particular, plays a central role across every area of a facility, balancing aesthetics with durability, safety and long-term performance.

First Impressions Matter: Entrances and Reception Areas

The member journey begins the moment someone walks through the door. Entrance and reception areas help shape first impressions, influencing how welcoming, professional and comfortable a facility feels.

For operators, these areas need to work hard. They must cope with constant footfall while remaining easy to maintain and visually appealing over time. Flooring can help establish clear zoning, improve acoustic comfort and create a more cohesive brand experience throughout the space.

As a manufacturer working across fitness and leisure environments, we understand how important it is to balance performance with atmosphere. Durable LVT, carpet tiles and entrance matting systems can help reduce wear, minimise tracked-in dirt and support quieter, more sociable reception environments. Solutions such as Creation 70 LVT and Lunar Carpet tiles are designed specifically for high-traffic environments, combining durability with modern finishes suited to contemporary fitness interiors.

Inclusive design is equally important. Clear transitions between spaces, slip-resistant surfaces and accessible layouts all contribute to creating environments that feel open and welcoming to a wider range of users.

High-Performance Training Zones Require High-Performance Flooring

Different training environments place very different demands on flooring systems. Selecting the right solution for each zone is essential to supporting both operational performance and member comfort.

Cardio Areas

Cardio zones experience constant movement, high footfall and ongoing equipment use. Flooring in these spaces must support comfort underfoot while helping to manage noise and vibration.

Acoustic control is becoming increasingly important within modern gyms, particularly in open-plan facilities where multiple activities take place simultaneously. Flooring can help reduce noise transfer while also supporting clearer zoning and wayfinding through the use of colour and material variation.

Solutions including Taraflex Surface Vinyl, GTI Max Tiles and Powershock 80 Rubber are designed to withstand heavy daily use while maintaining durability, grip and ease of maintenance.

Strength & Functional Training Areas

Heavy weight and functional training zones require a different level of protection and resilience. These environments must withstand repeated impact, dropped equipment and intense daily activity while maintaining safety and stability.

Flooring in these spaces plays an important role in:

Protecting subfloors

Supporting shock absorption

Reducing sound transfer

Improving grip and user confidence

As a manufacturer, we recognise that durability alone is not enough. These spaces must also remain visually professional and comfortable to use over the long term.

Rubber flooring systems such as Powershock 300 are specifically developed for high-impact training environments, helping to absorb shock and reduce noise while supporting intense fitness activity. Wall protection systems and stainless steel finishes can also help prevent damage in high-contact areas, maintaining appearance and reducing ongoing maintenance requirements.

Functional training spaces place additional emphasis on movement, agility and versatility. Flooring must support dynamic exercises while remaining hygienic and easy to maintain. Products such as Taraflex Evolution and Taraflex Performance Sports Vinyl combine comfort, grip and durability to support a wide range of activities.

Creating Comfortable and Hygienic Changing & Wellness Spaces

Recovery and wellbeing spaces have become an increasingly important part of the overall fitness journey. Modern facilities are now expected to provide environments that support relaxation, recovery and comfort beyond exercise alone.

Changing rooms, wellness areas and recovery zones must therefore feel clean, calm and welcoming while still meeting demanding operational requirements.

Slip resistance, hygiene and ease of maintenance remain essential considerations, particularly in wet areas. Flooring and wall protection systems must withstand moisture, regular cleaning and high levels of daily use without compromising appearance or comfort.

As a manufacturer, we understand that these spaces contribute significantly to overall member perception. When designed well, they help extend dwell time, encourage repeat visits and reinforce a premium experience.

Flooring Solutions such as Tarasafe H2O Vinyl are designed specifically for wet and barefoot environments, combining slip resistance with comfort underfoot and easy-clean performance. Complementary wall protection systems help maintain hygiene standards while reducing long-term wear and damage.

The wider wellness trend continues to influence fitness design, with increasing focus on:

Recovery spaces

Mindfulness and mental wellbeing

Spa-inspired interiors

Longer member dwell time

This has created demand for softer, calmer interiors that feel less clinical and more hospitality-led.

Flooring’s Role in Community Health and Wellbeing

Fitness facilities are no longer simply places to exercise. Increasingly, they function as social spaces, wellbeing hubs and community destinations that encourage healthier lifestyles and stronger connections.

Design plays a major role in shaping how people experience these environments. Spaces that feel intimidating, noisy or uncomfortable can discourage participation, while welcoming, accessible interiors can help broaden engagement across different ages, abilities and confidence levels.

As a manufacturer working across leisure, education and community fitness environments, we see how thoughtful design can positively influence participation and long-term usage.

Acoustic comfort, clear zoning, durable finishes and softer visual schemes all contribute to spaces that feel more approachable and inclusive. Flooring can also help create safer, more comfortable environments that support movement and reduce fatigue during use.

“When spaces feel welcoming, accessible and comfortable, people are more likely to engage, participate and build lasting healthy habits.”

This is particularly important within schools, universities, leisure centres and community gyms, where facilities often serve a wide range of users with differing needs and expectations.

Ultimately, successful fitness spaces are those that encourage people not only to visit – but to return regularly.

A Complete Flooring Solution Across Every Space

Consistency across a fitness facility helps improve both operational performance and the overall member experience. Different zones require different technical characteristics, but maintaining a cohesive visual identity remains equally important.

As a manufacturer, our role is to support operators, designers and specifiers with flooring and wall protection solutions tailored to the specific demands of each space, from entrances and cardio zones through to wellness areas and changing rooms.

Coordinated flooring systems can help deliver:

Consistent design continuity

Improved durability across high-use areas

Easier maintenance and cleaning

Better acoustic and comfort performance

Long-term lifecycle value

The new Gerflor Fitness Solutions brochure showcases a complete range of flooring systems designed to perform beautifully across every fitness environment.

A major milestone in Scottish education has been achieved with the opening of the Dunfermline Learning Campus in West Fife. Purpose-built to inspire learning, the state-of-the-art facility spans 26,666 m² and accommodates 2,700 pupils and 246 staff, making it the UK’s largest building constructed to Passivhaus standards.

Gerflor has played a key role in the project’s success, supplying over 14,000 m² of high-performance flooring solutions including Taraflex® sports flooring, DLW Marmorette Linoleum, Tarasafe Safety flooring, and Powershock 300 rubber tiles. Alongside this, Gradus accessories including stair nosings and a variety of trim finishes were also supplied, the combined package of products from both Gerflor and Gradus were specified for their exceptional durability, safety, and style to meet the needs of the various areas across the facility.

The large variety of Gerflor and Gradus products were specified for key areas throughout the school, including the games and sports halls, fitness studio, circulation areas, reception, corridors, classrooms, changing rooms, WC’s and kitchen and servery areas. The project also extended to other versatile spaces designed to support the needs of students and staff, with flooring solutions that deliver long-lasting performance, practical design, and aesthetic appeal for diverse spaces across the facility interiors.

Commenting on the project, Maggie Smith, Scotland Team Leader at Gerflor, said, “We initially had only our Olympic pedigree Taraflex sports flooring and Powershock 300 Rubber tiles specified with the architects on this project. As partners on the Framework Agreement with BAM, we collaborated closely with them to review the overall project and identify areas where cost savings could be achieved on the flooring package, which had originally been specified by another supplier. This approach allowed us to ensure the best possible outcome for both the client and the project.”

Elaborating on the specification decision, Maggie added, “At Gerflor and Gradus, we were able to offer a comprehensive flooring and accessories package that not only met the project’s functional and aesthetic requirements but also delivered significant cost efficiencies. By tailoring our solution to align with the budgetary goals without compromising on quality, we demonstrated the value of working with a supplier who can provide both innovation and cost-effectiveness.”

The responsibility for installing the flooring products and accessories for this high-profile project fell to Veitchi Flooring, one of the UK’s largest and most respected flooring contractors.

Recognised as a market leader, Veitchi Flooring has built a reputation for setting the benchmark in quality and professionalism across the industry. With headquarters in Glasgow and additional offices in Dundee and Aberdeen, Veitchi Flooring offers the capacity and flexibility to handle contracts of any scale across the UK. Their extensive expertise and specialist knowledge allow them to provide tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of each customer, ensuring exceptional results every time.

Commenting on the specification of Gerflor and Gradus products, Jamie Cargill, Contracts Supervisor at Veitchi Flooring, said, “The Dunfermline Learning Campus project was awarded through an open tender process, competing against other major flooring contractors across the UK. The client required a range of options to achieve cost savings without compromising quality. We recommended Gerflor and Gradus products because of their exceptional design appeal, durability, performance, and competitive price point … these were key factors in delivering an effective overall solution.”

Discussing the installation process, Jamie Cargill added, “Our team on site ranged from four to ten fitters, including one apprentice and a visiting supervisor. The project was completed within a fifty-week timescale, from start to finish, ensuring we met all deadlines while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship.”

The creation of Dunfermline Learning Campus has been a true collaborative effort, bringing together key stakeholders such as Fife Council, Fife College, the Scottish Government, and the Scottish Futures Trust. The project was procured and managed by hub East Central Scotland, ensuring that the campus was delivered on schedule and to the highest quality standards, meeting the needs of both the educational institutions and the local community.

Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, Jenny Gilruth, commented, “This is an important milestone for the Dunfermline Learning Campus, and I know that the new school building will be of significant benefit to pupils, teachers and the local community.” Her statement reflects the broader impact of the project, highlighting its long-term value to the educational experience and for the area as a whole.

Summing up the project Jamie Cargill ended by saying, “Veitchi, BAM construction and the client are extremely pleased with how the new school has turned out. We have used Gerflor and Gradus products in the past on many varied projects with outstanding success. We will continue to specify Gerflor and Gradus for their consistently high-quality products that excel in both performance and design.”

Not only a centre of learning excellence the building is also a great asset to the local community. The modern sports facilities are fully accessible by pupils, teachers, parents and the wider community and can accommodate the needs of both large groups and individual users alike.

Maggie Smith concluded, “The new installation of interior flooring and accessory products from Gerflor and Gradus deliver an impressive visual impact. The school has only been open a few months and the client is delighted with the final finish and overall performance of our world class products.”

With the addition of the Gerflor Winsford Warehouse in 2020/21, which boasts over half a million m² of flooring readily available on its shelves, the Dunfermline Learning Campus project benefited significantly from streamlined supply chain management. This state-of-the-art facility not only ensures an extensive stock of bestselling products but also reduces lead times and supports efficient distribution across the UK.

For the Dunfermline project, this meant having immediate access to the required flooring materials without delays, ensuring that the project timeline was met seamlessly. The strategic location of the warehouse further enhanced logistical efficiency, enabling quick and reliable delivery to the site. By leveraging the scale and capability of Winsford’s operations, Gerflor demonstrated its ability to handle large-scale projects with precision and consistency, reinforcing its reputation for excellence in supply chain management.

The Bristol Royal Infirmary was founded by public subscription in 1735, making it one of the oldest infirmaries in the United Kingdom. When it was in dire need of an urgent renovation for one of its busiest corridors, Gerflor the International flooring expert supplied their highly specialised Mipolam Affinity flooring, alongside Gradus for their world class SureProtect Endure Wall Cladding system in the King Edward Building at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The End User was able to benefit from a complete solution, reducing time and cost as part of its specification process.

Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) is a large teaching hospital in the centre of Bristol, England. It has links with the nearby University of Bristol and the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of the West of England, also in Bristol. The BRI is one of nine hospitals operated by the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

Most healthcare facilities including the Bristol Royal Infirmary see the importance of hardwearing interior finishes and how crucial they are when it comes to the overall building specification. The movement of items such as beds, trolleys, wheelchairs, and heavy medical equipment is a twenty-four-hour operation, therefore any floorings and wall protection products installed needed to withstand the daily rigours of a demanding hospital environment.

This is where the world class Mipolam Affinity collection exceeded the expectations of the Healthcare End User, in its outstanding performance when it comes to durability and easy low-cost maintenance. The Mipolam Affinity range was specified thanks to its 100% pure PVC construction which is a pressed and calendered homogeneous vinyl floorcovering, Its’ single layer of PVC delivers numerous benefits including: a remarkably high abrasion resistance, and it is also lighter, more flexible, and less brittle. It is also suitable for hot welding and ideal for creating seamless finishes, making it a widely popular choice for hardworking hospitals, laboratories, and cleanroom environments. The Mipolam Affinity range also comes with a unique and revolutionary surface treatment called Evercare™, that delivers an unrivalled level of chemical and stain resistance. In choosing Gerflor’s Mipolam Affinity the crucial element of high traffic, was successfully addressed, which was a high priority on the client’s specification agenda.

The refurbishment project would also benefit from the specification and installation of the Gradus Wall Protection system, comprising of the SureProtect Endure Wall Cladding and PVC-u SHR40P Handrails, alongside the High Impact Corner Guards, which provided an ideal protective solution for the busy healthcare environment.

Chris Pursey, Gerflor Key Account Healthcare Manager – Flooring commented on the project by saying, “The Estates team at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) and their contractor Sisk approached Gerflor for a complete flooring and wall protection specification for this highly busy service corridor. The existing wall and floor finishes were extremely worn and damaged and they wanted to quickly and efficiently improve the appearance of the space by introducing some lighter colours. Specifying Gerflor’s Mipolam Affinity from the fifty colours available to choose from and the Gradus wall protection system was the ideal fast track choice.”

In order to meet the specific requirements of the different areas of hospitals, Gerflor offer products that provide unparalleled resistance to foot, wheeled, heavy loading traffic with particularly durable flooring that is exceptionally hygienic thanks to the antibacterial and antiviral properties of their specialised ranges.

Chris Pursey explained that the trust had used Gerflor flooring and Gradus wall protection on previous projects and they wanted to use a single business that could provide a complete and holistic flooring and wall protection specification. The area has varying floor levels with ramps, so handrails were specified alongside wall protection sheets for additional safety. Mipolam Affinity flooring was chosen in two colours, with a darker grey used as a border to assist with wayfinding.

Ian Cartwright, Gradus Specification Area Sales Manager – Wall Protection, commented, “When we first visited this corridor, there was excessive damage to the walls, caused mainly by trolleys and wheelchairs. The site team had been making good the walls for a number of years, but long term this could not be sustained. As a combined business, Gerflor and Gradus were offered the opportunity to improve and renovate the healthcare corridor for both the flooring and walls, to propose some innovations that would deliver the required protection for the facility and ensure that any recommendations would also offer tangible cost savings for the client. By doing both together, it enabled Gerflor and Gradus to offer a complete and holistic surface protection solution that was not only aesthetically pleasing but would also deliver the technical performance required for the building, this included specifying the colour contrasts that would meet all the Approved Document M regulations for Light Reflectance Values (LRV’s). It was decided to match the SureProtect Endure wall cladding to the main colour of the walls and then use a contrasting colour for both the handrails and corner guards to meet the required guidelines.”

Representing the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) hospital, Nicholas Marsh, the Estates Officer for Capital, and PLACE Projects commented, “We needed a project where Gerflor and Gradus could provide a complete solution for the busy corridor in the King Edward building within the hospital. This corridor was identified as requiring complete renovation by the surveyors.”

On specification choices, Nicholas Marsh noted that they had problems ordering flooring from other companies due to the lead time, as the materials needed to be shipped in from abroad. Gerflor was recommended to them by their floor layer, together with a number of meetings taking place with the Gerflor representative Chris Pursey.

The area in question is one of the thoroughfares to the Hospital so there were issues with safe access and times for laying. Gerflor were able to supply the ideal solution that could be delivered in a timely manner.

The UK arm for the international construction and civil engineering company Sisk based in Bristol, would be tasked with delivering the installation element for the King Edward corridor project. The need for a high-quality install would be paramount as it would be providing a ‘showcase’ opportunity for the Gerflor and Gradus products.

Delivering excellence in the UK for almost 40 years with a proud record of leadership in the construction industry in Ireland and €1.5bn annual turnover, Sisk have the track record, scale, and capacity to successfully undertake large, complex, multidisciplinary programmes.

Mark Smith, Operations Manager at Sisk commented, “The project came about with a PLACE Visit which is patient-led and care in the environment. They identified that the corridor was requiring urgent refurbishment. The project had been in the pipeline for a few years but had got curtailed due to COVID and available funds.”

The timescales and fitting for the project would be on a very short lead time with Mark Smith outlining that they completed the installation in only one week for the Gerflor flooring and a further week for the Gradus wall protection and handrails, with two fitters utilised for each of the products specified. Mark Smith also explained that the Gerflor and Gradus products installed had recently been approved by the Trust and this renovation project was an ideal opportunity to showcase these world class innovations. The flooring and wall cladding installation and fitting went smoothly with no problems. This was particularly essential as Sisk were working in a ‘live’ hospital environment.

Making further comment Mark Smith summed up Sisk’s involvement by saying, “We had absolutely no issues with the Gerflor or Gradus products. The client is extremely pleased with the final result. Gerflor and Gradus are now the approved flooring and wall protection supplier for the Trust, with extensive works producing brochures and swatches to ensure the colours are suitable for the Healthcare environment.”

Ian Cartwright finally commented, “Being part of this project from start to finish was immensely rewarding. To see the difference, with the before and after images, demonstrates what can be done in a cost-effective way when using one supplier, who have both the products and experience, to enhance the buildings appearance, its longevity, and its overall performance.”

In conclusion Chris Pursey said, “The new Mipolam Affinity flooring is a big improvement on the old safety flooring that was previously installed and the replacement flooring from Gerflor is far easier to clean and maintain. The University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust,

have recently chosen Gerflor and Gradus as their go to supplier for floors, walls, and accessories, which means that we can now supply the complete solution that they are seeking.”

When it comes to hospital floor coverings and wall protection in hospital environments, both Gerflor and Gradus have a continued commitment to product innovation, and this is paramount to their success in hospitals worldwide. The demands of the clinical environment in terms of infection control, hygiene, maintenance, and performance have pushed Gerflor and Gradus to create a comprehensive range of solutions for key areas in any hospital environment.

Nicholas Marsh ended by saying, “The Gerflor and Gradus products are performing exceptionally well and have been installed now for over six months. The new flooring and wall protection solutions have significantly upgraded the look and feel of the facility, and we would definitely specify Gerflor and Gradus again as their products are of a high quality.”

The Gerflor and Gradus healthcare ranges are ideal for use in a wide variety of applications across a healthcare facility. Products can be combined to provide a complete package that balances performance, aesthetics and cost, alongside environmentally responsible manufacturing processes.

Gloucester-based International Plywood has recently completed a state-of-the-art new build for their main office complex. This impressive development incorporated a comprehensive interior design scheme featuring flooring and finishing solutions from Gerflor, an international flooring specialist, and Gradus, a UK manufacturer of comprehensive range of contract interior solutions. The vast array of products installed were selected for their outstanding and striking aesthetics and the high standards of safety and durability required by the End User, for which both Gerflor and Gradus products are world-renowned and recognised for. Solutions included the world class Creation LVT, Gradus Lunar Carpets, Mipolam Planet, Gradus XT and BasicZ stair edgings, Gradus SureProtect Pure Wall protection and Gradus Mat-in-a-Box.

Since its formation in 1981, Gloucester-based International Plywood has earned its reputation through a commitment to friendly, informal service alongside delivering professional, high-quality results. International Plywood focuses on supplying customers with the right panel solutions, backed by their extensive industry experience. With consistent growth from a turnover of £14 million in 1998 to over £150 million in 2020, their success reflects the reliability and quality of their products and service.

For this project, Gerflor delivered a comprehensive range of flooring solutions tailored to the needs of the office environment. Central to the design was the seamless integration of Creation 55 Looselay flooring with the Gradus Lunar carpet tiles. Sharing the same thickness, these innovative products enabled a smooth and uninterrupted transition between areas, without the need for joining strips, resulting in a unified and visually appealing finish throughout the space.

Adding a vibrant touch to the back stairway, Mipolam Planet in Aventurine, a bright green shade, offered a durable and low-maintenance solution for this high-traffic area. Safety was prioritised on the staircases, with Gradus XT stair edgings enhancing slip resistance and visibility on the main stairway, while Gradus BasicZ stair edgings provided a practical and cost-effective option for the back stairs.

To further promote hygiene and durability, Gradus SureProtect Pure wall protection was installed in the shower rooms and toilets. Its’ impact resistance and easy-to-clean surface made it an essential addition to these spaces. At the entranceway, Gradus Mat-in-a-Box played a critical role in trapping dirt and moisture, preserving the quality of the interior flooring and ensuring safety throughout the building.

Chris Pursey, Gerflor’s Specification Area Sales Manager – Flooring, explained, “Stanley Partnership Architects approached us to specify flooring solutions that included luxury vinyl tile, safety and homogeneous flooring, carpet tiles, entrance matting, stair edgings, and even hygienic wall cladding for bathrooms. The range of Gerflor and Gradus products were installed across various locations throughout the complex, from offices and corridors to stairs, bathrooms, staff areas, and toilets.”

Chris Pursey, further emphasised the design impact of the materials used. Located on a brownfield site with excellent M5 access, the project allowed for close oversight of the seamless integration of Gerflor and Gradus products. Chris commented further “The Creation 55 LVT Looselay tiles paired effortlessly with Gradus Lunar carpet tiles, eliminating the need for joining strips and achieving a high-quality interior finish. Additionally, the incorporation of plywood alongside these elements contributed a unique and visually striking dimension to the design.”

Ian Cartwright, Gradus Specification Area Sales Manager – Wall Protection, commented, “The accessories we provided, including the stair edgings and wall protection systems, were vital in ensuring the project met both safety and aesthetic requirements. From improved stair visibility to enhanced hygiene in wet areas, the Gradus solutions added long-term value to the space and contributed to the seamless integration of functionality and design.”

Stanley Partnership Architects, who have collaborated with Gerflor on past projects, specified Gerflor’s flooring for its versatility and suitability for multiple spaces. They also desired a complete solution and were looking for specification support on the wall protection and stair edgings requirements for the facility and were pleased to be able to source this from Gradus, which is a part of the Gerflor Group.

Stanley Partnership Architects were founded in 1978, this family-run firm, based in Cheltenham, is a a multi-disciplined practice that provides a diverse range of architectural services. Their national portfolio of services are suitable for both Professional & Domestic clients in Housing, Private extensions/remodelling and also the Commercial sectors.

Director Andy Hobdey of Stanley Partnership Architects explained that the client approached them shortly after purchasing the site, seeking architectural support for planning conditions, building regulations, and the construction phase. With the site intended to serve as the company’s headquarters and main warehouse, the project presented a rare opportunity to create a well-designed, bright, and inspiring workspace for the employees, made possible by the client’s clear vision and commitment.

On specification Andy Hobdey went on to say, “We already had an existing relationship with the Gerflor team and knew immediately that their innovative product ranges would give us the versatility and durability required for the spaces we wanted to create. There is a wide choice of contemporary finishes that are recognised for their outstanding technical performance especially, when it comes to the safety of users.”

Andy Hobdey further added “It was of immense value to also be able to access and specify the Gradus Wall Protection and Accessory Stair edging products as part of the iconic project, having the relationship with Gerflor enabled us to fast track the project and also include the finishing solutions from the Gradus offer to be a part of the renovation project”.

Reflecting on his experience with the project, Ian Cartwright noted that working with his counterpart Chris Pursey from Gerflor, at the start of the installation phase, highlighted the impressive and diverse range of products Gerflor can supply for commercial interior refurbishment and new build projects.

Ian Cartwright went on to further add “As a combined business, we are able to offer our clients complete solutions ranging from high quality floorings such as LVT, Carpets, Safeties, Homogeneous vinyl’s from Gerflor, alongside our Gradus entrance matting, stair edgings and wall protection systems, this is a comprehensive complete solution which makes specification and purchasing even easier for all our customers.”

Andy Hobdey highlighted that the support provided by the Gerflor and Gradus teams during construction, along with the finished results, surpassed expectations. Based on positive feedback from both the client and their workforce regarding the completed offices and ancillary spaces, Hobdey expressed confidence in returning to Gerflor and Gradus for future projects.

Andy Hobdey concluded, “The client and our teams are highly impressed with the final interior finish, this prestigious project required careful and thoughtful selection of building construction products, that would seamlessly work with the design vision we wanted to create for the end user. It has achieved this and could not have been possible without the support of the Gerflor and Gradus teams. We would not hesitate to use Gerflor and Gradus again in future specifications.”

Summing up the project Chris Pursey concluded, “Being part of this world class project was incredibly rewarding. The range of Gerflor and Gradus solutions which were installed throughout the facility, showcased our ability to provide an end-to-end comprehensive solution for a variety of applications, resulting in a visually and functionally exceptional finish.”

Eastleigh Housing Association provides a range of low-cost social housing to the local community for people needing somewhere to live, this is overseen and operated by Eastleigh Borough Council. When a much-needed bathroom refurbishment was required, it would see international flooring specialist Gerflor supply their new Mural Revela wall covering solution, alongside the new Tarasafe H2O safety vinyl for a complete fast track renovation. The ‘need for speed’ would be pivotal, as the client’s tenant would be in ‘situ’ as the wall covering and flooring was being installed.

Commenting on the project Tim Linghorn, Gerflor Specification Area Sales Manager, Residential and Housing said, “We have a strong relationship with the council who oversee the Eastleigh Housing Association. During our initial meeting, we presented our Mural Revela wall covering product, which greatly impressed them. They expressed serious interest in considering it, recognising the positive benefits it could offer for their housing stock. Consequently, Gerflor proposed a free trial for an upcoming bathroom refurbishment project.”

Tim Linghorn elaborated on the specification choices, noting that their existing relationship with the council played a crucial role. “Gerflor flooring is already used in other council projects, and the new Mural Revela product range introduced further innovation and efficiency, this extremely impressed the council. The main challenge was the need for a fast installation, as the resident would be remaining in the property during the refurbishment, necessitating for a timely completion.”

The refurbishment and installation for this project would need to be of the highest quality in order to meet the exceptional standards required by the Housing Association, whilst also being able to complete the renovation works within a very tight timeline. The installation for this transformational project would be the responsibility of Danson Developments Ltd.

Danson Developments Ltd is an experienced and reliable fit-out company. Since being formed in 1996 they have built a reputation as one of the south’s leading fit-out companies. This is due to their ability to design and deliver innovative fit-out and refurbishment projects across a range of sectors, helping to inspire staff and engage clients, and transform properties. As an experienced fit-out contractor, they manage every stage of vast variety of projects in an efficient and timely manner. From the initial consultation to the final brush stroke, they take care of the interior fit-out project to save time and money, working ‘with’ the client rather than ‘for’ the client to ensure the best possible outcome.

Daniel Burton, Director, Danson Developments Ltd said, “We are preferred contractors for a number of clients who have these types of projects. On site we had three fitters who were all ‘multi- trade’, enabling them to install the Gerflor Mural Revela wall covering, together with providing the plumbing expertise and the specialist floor laying skills to also fit the Gerflor Tarasafe H20 safety flooring to an extremely high standard.”

Daniel Burton emphasised the tight critical timelines for the refurbishment, highlighting that the whole project was started on the Monday and handed back to the client and the tenant at lunchtime on the Wednesday. This rapid turnaround was made possible thanks to the easy installation of the Tarasafe H2O safety vinyl floor, it was noted for its light weight and flexibility when compared to other wet room vinyl’s, with the welds being particularly easy to manage thus reducing any downtime on site.

During the renovation, the Gerflor Mural Revela wall covering was also a fast-track solution and it saved time in the transformation, as it was fitted over the existing ceramic tiles in the bathroom, with no need to remove the existing wall covering surface in place, there was also no waste as the off cuts could be easily

recycled, making this solution an innovative and ecofriendly product for the social housing project. The Housing Association was also impressed with the tongue and groove format of the tiles, which allowed for an even faster installation that could be easily clicked together to renovate the walls quickly and with minimal mess on site.

With this extremely fast turnaround due to the combined specification of Gerflor flooring and wall covering products, the tenant at the Eastleigh Housing Association property was able to remain at home without any disruption to his everyday living.

In conclusion, Tim Linghorn commented that, “This is the first time that Eastleigh Housing Association has tested Mural Revela, and they were extremely pleased with the finished results. Following the trial, Mural Revela has been added to the Eastleigh Borough Council specification list, due to its versatility for installers, time-saving benefits, and quick, mess-free installation process.”

Dan Burton concluded, “The installers and clients are extremely delighted with the reduced fitting times of both Mural Revela wall covering and H2O safety vinyl. This combined package has led to a much faster handover and has also minimised disruption for the tenants. We would not hesitate to specify Gerflor products again.”

The Monmouthshire Building Society (MBS) is a leading financial services provider, that wanted to create a unique and welcoming office space in an historic building in Cardiff that they had recently acquired. High on the specification agenda was the need for extremely high quality, fit for purpose floorings and accessories. These would be supplied by Gerflor, the international flooring specialists and Gradus, a leading UK manufacturer of Flooring Accessories.

The world class products specified as part of this iconic refurbishment included Creation LVT, Tarasafe Vinyl Floorcoverings, & for the complete package Gradus Stair Edgings, Floor Trims & Boulevard 1500 Barrier Matting. The final finish is remarkable and impressive and will serve the employees and local community for many years to come.

Established in Newport in 1869 to help local people build homes, Monmouthshire Building Society now help people across Wales and England buy properties and save for their future. MBS were looking for an interior company who could help them transform the space into an environment that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They wanted a warm and natural theme that reflected their brand identity and created a homely feel. They also wanted to introduce sustainable materials and plants throughout the spaces to boost productivity.

The overall responsibility for the project was placed in the talented hands of Cardiff- based office interiors company DGOI. For over thirty years, DGOI has been dedicated to providing a high-quality service by delivering and installing ergonomic office furniture and providing complete office refurbishment turnkey solutions for their clients.

Michelle Sheppard- Head of Design at DGOI said, “The building was an old and empty shell that required a lot of work to transform it into a modern and functional office space. The client also wanted to reflect their brand identity without being too imposing or overwhelming. The D&G team worked closely with the client, contractors, and suppliers to overcome the challenges of working on an old building. We added a raised access floor to the first floor to give the society the flexibility needed in a modern office. Also added were toilet blocks and kitchens on each floor to make the space more functional.”

On design and specification and to reflect the client’s brand identity, the designers suggested using a warm and natural theme that featured timber, earthy tones, and tonal oranges. The result was a unique office space that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing and reflected the client’s brand identity in a subtle and understated way.

The collection of Gerflor floorings and Gradus accessories supplied would be specified for the main kitchen area, the corridors, and walkways, together with some of the break-out areas, meeting spaces and the toilets.

The project would benefit from Gerflor’s Creation LVT range, Tarasafe Ultra and Ultra H20 Safety Vinyl floorings, together with a selection of Gradus Stair Edgings, Barrier Matting, and Floor Trims.

Michelle Sheppard went onto further comment, “We specified the Creation LVT ranges from Gerflor, as they perfectly suited the project brief in terms of the design and interior, we were trying to create for the clients brief and they fitted well, alongside the level of the carpets we chose. We also specified the Tarasafe safety floorings, as they were extremely fit for purpose and provided the safety aspects we were looking for within the showers, together with being aesthetically pleasing and fitting with the design theme.”

Tony Thorne, Gerflor Sales and Specification Manager South Wales said, “Following a visit after launching our new Creation LVT ranges the designers at D&G office interiors (DGOI) thought that some of the new designs would fit in with a project they were working on and went on to specify them for the Monmouthshire Building Society refurbishment. “

On specification Tony Thorne added, “Initial discussions started back in January 2020, but Covid put the project on hold. When we presented the new launch of the Gerflor Creation 70 & 55 Looselay LVT ranges, the team at DGOI all commented on how the new Tatami Raffia design would fit in with a project they were working on along with the Longboard design.”

Making a final comment on the Monmouthshire Building Society project Tony Thorne said, “I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the designers at DGOI on projects, the interiors team’s positivity is infectious and Jake, their office dog always gets a tickle.”

Michelle Sheppard concluded, “Tony Thorne, our local Specification Manager from Gerflor, is always extremely helpful and full of advice, which is unbelievably valuable on a large job like this. Ourselves and our client MBS were incredibly pleased with the result and would specify Gerflor and Gradus products again.”

When Kings College Sixth Form School, a Somerset-based private school decided on a large flooring upgrade and refurbishment, they very wisely settled on the suggested specification from Rud Sawers Architects Ltd, their appointed architect. This would include a combination of world class flooring products from international flooring and interior specialists Gerflor. The project would comprise a combination of Gerflor’s Urban Myth Carpet Tiles from Gradus for Classrooms, Creation 55 LVT for the Reception and Stairways, and Tarasafe Impression safety flooring for WC facilities, alongside a selection of Gradus accessories, including BasicZ Stair Edging and Boulevard 7000 Matting for the education facility. The overall project would ultimately see 800m2 of new flooring installed.

King’s College in Taunton, Somerset is an independent co-educational boarding and day school offering places to pupils from ages thirteen to eighteen. The school occupies a secluded and beautiful site of over 80 acres on the south side of Taunton, and just a few minutes from the town centre. The main building is an outstanding example of nineteenth-century architecture, with the entire site, a mixture of traditional and modern buildings. As well as an academic programme of robust subjects, there is a multitude of sports and co-curricular activities available that are popular across all age groups. The school provides inspired teaching, superb facilities, and the nurturing of individual potential, combines to create an environment in which young people achieve remarkable things. The outstanding modern facilities and stunning location ensure that children enjoy a challenging all-round education in a progressive, secure, and stimulating environment.

The renovation project provides a new, contemporary, low energy 6th Form, set within the historic learning environment of Kings College. The building accommodates a burgeoning programme of education and life skills, to make King’s College an even more attractive option for their 16+ pupils. The building is modern, flexible, inspiring, technologically advanced, sympathetic to new learning strategies and anchored in sustainable energy principles.

The Gerflor Specification Sales Manager at the time of the installation, Chris Pursey said, “Rud Sawers Architects initially specified Creation 55 LVT for the reception and stairways but approached Gerflor to discuss other areas within the project. The Architect, Rud Sawers Architects Ltd found it beneficial to speak with us about the whole project including carpet tiles, safety flooring and flooring accessories, together with stair edgings and entrance matting. Specifying Gerflor and also Gradus throughout the project, saved considerable time compared with dealing with multiple manufacturers, and the client was extremely pleased with the vast range of products to choose from within our portfolio.”

Totnes-based architects Rud Sawers has a simple design philosophy which is to transform project constraints into positive opportunities that produce inventive, unique, and beautiful buildings. Their practice has been steadily building a reputation for its exciting contemporary yet sensitive design approach and offer a full range of architectural design services.

Rud Sawers, Director, Rud Sawers Architects Ltd commented, “In 2016, Rud Sawers Architects (RSA) won a design competition to design a new Arts building on the site. This was completed in 2018 and was received very positively by the client and the pupils. We were invited, alongside other architects to compete for a new commission to design a new Sixth Form building. We were selected as the Architect and enjoy a very positive professional relationship with the school.”

On specification Rud Sawers went on to further say, “The Gerflor and Gradus products we specified, were fit for purpose and available in attractive finishes that perfectly suited the visual identity we were trying to create for the educational establishment. We specified Gerflor flooring for the ground floor, first floor and second floor of the building.”

Commenting further on the project Rud Sawers said, “The real challenge however with this project, was working through the Covid Pandemic, maintaining construction momentum and meeting the brief for carbon Net Zero operations head on, which we achieved with a great degree of success.”

The installation of the considerable amount of Gerflor flooring and Gradus Accessory products would need to be of the highest standards, as set by both the school and the architect. The delivery of the final outcome would be the responsibility of Bristol-based Gollop Contract Flooring.

Started in 1981, Gollop Contract Flooring are a successful family-run Bristol business specialising in commercial flooring installation. They pride themselves on delivering exceptional service to clients, both existing and new. With over 40 years of experience, they specialise in providing the very best of commercial flooring and employ in excess of 50 operatives and staff. During their many years of trading, experience and service has enabled the company to provide cost-effective solutions to any flooring project along with the deserved reputation and professional quality of their staff and workmanship from skilled craftsmen.

Matt Donovan, Contracts Manager, Gollop Flooring commented, “We have worked in partnership with CG Fry the contractors on several projects and this was one of several projects, where we had been awarded the flooring package. The Gerflor and Gradus products that we installed were specified by the Architect Rud Sawers.”

On specification, Matt Donovan went on to further comment, “The overall project was approximately 800m2 which included a mixture of Gerflor Honey Oak LVT, Gradus Graphite & Peridot carpet tiles and Gerflor Brescia Tarasafe Impression safety vinyl. Part of the building was on a concrete base and other sections on a timber base, which required different preparation works to ensure correct installation of all the flooring products.”

On installation Matt Donovan added, “Our lead fitter Jamie Hook did a remarkable job on the installation and working with the site team over a period of six weeks.”

Matt Donovan concluded, “This was an iconic project to be involved with. Every flooring installation can have its unique challenges but overall, this one was extremely straightforward to lay, thanks to the technologically advanced solutions that were specified.

I understand the building is now in full use and the new Gerflor flooring and Gradus accessory products are performing very well. We work with Gerflor and Gradus on many projects and consider them to be some of the best manufacturers in the industry.”

Rob Walker, Gerflor Specification Sales Manager, who worked with the Installer to manage the project concluded by saying, “The client is extremely pleased with the overall finished result. It was a notable project to work on and be involved with, and being able to supply a wide range of elite flooring and interior solutions that met the required brief was always our end goal for the client. The education establishment is future proofed for many years to come.”
