Beaulieu Convent School is a Roman Catholic independent school for girls located in St Helier, Jersey. When the education facility needed an urgent refurbishment, the well-established Catholic convent school would see international flooring specialist Gerflor supply a wide range of its internationally acclaimed floorcoverings. This included its Olympic pedigree Taraflex sports floorings, Creation LVT and Tarasafe Safety vinyl. Alongside this, Gradus matting and finishing solutions were also installed as part of the refurbishment program, for a complete package for the building project.

The interior collections both from Gerflor and Gradus were specified for their aesthetical appearance but also their trusted reliability for delivering the optimum levels of safety, comfort, performance, and durability that the education facility required.

Beaulieu Convent School was founded in 1937 by the Sisters of the Order of the Immaculate Conception and moved to its current site in 1951 and in 1999, the Sisters gifted the school via a trust to the Island of Jersey under the condition it would remain a Catholic school. Beaulieu Convent School is based on one campus, and is divided into preschool, primary and secondary departments, and it also operates a sixth form. Courses of study offered at the school include GCSEs, A Levels and BTECs. Beaulieu Convent School offers a broad and balanced education, placing every student at the heart of what they do, with a special blend of academic focus and pastoral excellence. Their community has strong values, rooted in a Catholic tradition established by the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, which provides students with a warm sense of belonging.

Chris Pursey, Gerflor Specification Area Sales Manager, Southwest, and Channel Islands commented, “Sport has a significant role and contribution to play in in Jersey …right through from schools to state facilities and community hubs. This centre is at the forefront of facilities on the Island and is used both by both the students and local sports clubs alike. It’s a cleverly designed building, clinging to the hillside above St Helier, offering a first-class education and sports facility to the local region.”

When it came to the onsite renovation program, the project involved more than one location that required refurbishment works. The priority was to upgrade the main sports hall with Gerflor’s Olympic pedigree Taraflex Sports vinyl floor coverings, specified for its outstanding credentials and reliability when it comes down to safety, comfort and performance. Creation 55 LVT was also specified for the Corridors and Fitness suite for its design finishes and ease of cleanability, whilst Tarasafe Safety Vinyl was chosen for the Changing rooms thanks to its unique surface treatment for easy maintenance.

In the Linking corridor, Stratus carpet tiles were chosen for their design aesthetics. In addition to Gerflor floorcoverings, a variety of Gradus products were also specified and installed, including Esplanade 8500 (external matting), Boulevard 5000 (internal matting), A range stair nosing’s, capping & coving finishing products, as well as SO100 sit on skirting, so that the End User could have a complete solution for the entire project from both businesses.

The overall responsibility for the refurbishment project would be managed by St Helier-based, Page Architects. Page Architects was founded in 2003, by George De Sousa and Paul Van Bodegom, with the philosophy of creating architecture that would exceed the Client’s expectations. Page Architects has since developed into a bespoke practice that is design detail-oriented, with the goal of providing imaginative architecture that responds to their clients’ briefs in their landscapes.

Commenting on the Beaulieu Convent School project George De Sousa, Director and Co-Owner at Page Architects said, “The project was developed to improve the sports facility offering to the pupils at Beaulieu, prompting their health and well-being. The success of the sports hall has enabled the school to rent the facility to various after school clubs and the community at weekends which has proved to be a great success.”

On specification George De Sousa explained, “We specified Taraflex sports vinyl flooring, after an element of research and receiving positive feedback regarding Gerflor’s sports offers following close collaboration with the school’s PE department.”

The overall management of the project would be tasked to Jersey-based AC Mauger. Founded in 1947, AC Mauger & Son Limited, was acquired by the Style Group in 1982 and has continued to deliver excellence in all aspects of the building industry. AC Mauger forms a major part of the Style Group and has been at the forefront of construction in Jersey for many years, delivering excellence in all aspects of the building industry.

AC Mauger is able to take on projects of all sizes within any element of the industry and has a proven track record throughout the island. They deliver projects on time, within budget and to the very highest standards. As the company has gathered many years of experience in the industry, their team of experts are well placed to advise customers on a variety of products, materials and design options which best suit the design and build requirements of any particular client. This in turn enables AC Mauger to produce the best finish within the required time, budget, and design brief.

Mark O’Shea, Contracts Manager at AC Mauger said, “We have been actively involved and working on various phases of Beaulieu Convent School for approximately four years, the Sports Hall being one of the last phases. Gerflor’s Taraflex sports flooring was specified by Page Architects as the best option for the project, thanks to its outstanding cushioning properties, exceptional comfort, and optimum safety for all users regardless of their age and ability and activity on the indoor sports surface.”

Mark O’Shea also commented,” In addition to the Taraflex sports floorings, we were delighted to be able to procure and specify other flooring solutions from Gerflor including Creation LVT for the Fitness suite and Corridors and Tarasafe Safety vinyl for the changing rooms. Working in partnership with Gerflor also enabled us to have the opportunity to access the Gradus portfolio, for Matting and Finishing solutions. Both the Gerflor and Gradus products specified are absolutely meeting the high expectations set by both the Architect and Beaulieu Convent School. We would definitely specify both Gerflor and Gradus flooring and finishing products again for other Education projects.

Mark O’Shea added, “This has turned out to be an incredible project to be involved with. We have received tremendous feedback from both the School and the Architect involved in this key transformation project. I am also aware that many leading sporting organisations are using the sports hall out of school hours and their comments on their user experiences have also been extremely positive and supportive to the facility upgrade.”

The installation element of the Beaulieu Convent School project would be undertaken by London-based JW Contract Flooring Ltd whose expertise and floor installation skills would deliver the high levels of finishing required.

Based near Hounslow in Kingston-upon-Thames, the Installer was established in 2008, their core activity is business-to-business installation services, backed up by a team with many years of combined experience in the supply and installation of premium quality floor and wall finishes. Respected for working to tight deadlines on installation projects through a willing team of professional flooring contractors, they are reactive to the needs of clients and help in the delivery of successful projects, across the commercial sector. They work professionally at all times and trade with a refreshingly honest approach to business, whilst maintaining high standards of workmanship at a competitive price.

James Waters, Company Director at JW Contracts commented, “We were delighted to be invited by Gerflor to see if we would like to be involved in this iconic project.” On specification James Waters added, “The majority of the flooring finishes were already originally specified as Gerflor products. We decided to also put forward additional Gerflor and Gradus products for the refurbishment program, for the intended use of the spaces across the facility. The Gerflor and Gradus flooring and interior finishing products are extremely easy to install, user friendly and of a high quality whilst being competitively priced. There has been a lot of media interest in the project and on that basis, I would deem the project as an accomplished success.”

In conclusion Mark O’Shea said, “I would just like to add a big thank you to all parties involved. Gerflor and Gradus were extremely helpful in recommending a high-quality subcontractor, whom we had never worked with in Jersey before. This made the whole project very straight forward and reduced project delivery times.”

Summing up the Beaulieu Convent School project, James Waters said, “We would definitely choose Gerflor and Gradus products again. We have a strong working relationship with their specification teams and are looking to further build on it. The main contractor is now bidding for a much larger gymnasium project in Jersey alongside Gerflor. It has been a great pleasure working with the Gerflor and Gradus specification teams on this valuable project. It was completely seamless in terms of arranging the logistics and the lead times on the products were remarkable, especially considering the location of the project and that we are primarily a UK mainland contractor.”

Chris Pursey, Specification Manager, ended by adding, “It was a pleasure visiting the facility now that it is complete and fully operational. It was remarkable to be able to specify solutions for every part of the building, from the main sports hall, dance studio, gym, changing rooms and corridors. Even the finishing accessories including stair edgings and matting.”

George De Sousa concluded, “The Gerflor floor coverings and Gradus finishing solutions that we have recommended and then were specified are more than meeting the high expectations we set. We would definitely choose Gerflor and Gradus products again for other projects in the commercial and public sector. The final result throughout the school looks simply stunning, and as we had hoped, has made a real difference for the staff, pupils and other users and visitors across the board.”

Founded in 1974 Langley School is a secondary school with academy status situated in the Borough of Solihull, West Midlands. In keeping with a continual programme of refurbishment, the main sports hall at the school would be high on the agenda for a new replacement floor. With a requirement to obtain the best sports floor on the market Langley School turned to international flooring specialist Gerflor to supply over 680m2 of their world-class Olympic pedigree Taraflex vinyl sports flooring in ‘Anthracite’ finish. As the main hall would also have to facilitate other non-sports activities including exams the school also opted for Taraflex® Bateco, which is a moveable solution for protecting multisports floors falling on non-sporting activities.

The school is a mixed, 11–16 comprehensive school with a current pupil roll of 1050 and their motto is ‘Be the best you can be’ which of course means that sports and fitness features on the comprehensive curriculum. Langley School aims to create environments where pupils of all abilities are able to learn, strive, and succeed. The school firmly believes that a lifelong love of movement is instilled by allowing young people to explore a variety of sports at a variety of levels. Their approach to sports is inclusive; the need for pupils to enjoy sports, and work with them to find a sport or sports that they will really enjoy. Sport offers the pupils more than just physical movement; it offers them the opportunity to lead, to be part of a team, and to enjoy the camaraderie that comes with working towards a collective goal. The staff come from a variety of sporting and educational backgrounds. Many have represented teams at national level and are fortunate to have sports leaders with first class coaching qualifications. All the sporting staff have a passion not just for their sport but for all sports taught at Langley School.

Outlining their decision to specify Gerflor sports products Mark Brown, Facilities Manager at Langley School said, “Our sports hall floor had become damaged, so I contacted Wayne Andrews at Gerflor to go through our options. On his recommendations, we decided to upgrade our sports flooring surface to Taraflex for the duty of care and protection qualities the product delivers, which is safer and more comfortable for our students. The durability of the Taraflex from Gerflor is absolutely first class and truly fit for purpose for many years to come.”

Commenting on the project Wayne Andrews, Gerflor Key Account Sports and Education Manager North said, “This was a direct enquiry through our technical support team followed up immediately by myself. The school had previously had an incredibly old low-profile system with lino and a depth/void difference which required a build-up.

The school chose Taraflex Subflex with Taraflex Evolution C3 Combi System offering high performance shock absorption levels of >45%, along with the immediate impact protection from Taraflex Evolution which was not present with the existing lino surface.

Along with shock absorption, Taraflex also provides the benefits of Protecsol Surface Treatment providing reduced friction build up (co-efficient of friction) and ease of cleanability with long-term low life cycle cost benefits for the school which means no polish for life.”

Wayne Andrews was keen to point out, “The school chose a sports floor manufactured by Gerflor, the world’s largest sports flooring manufacturer which has been used a grass roots level and all the way up to the Olympic Games since 1976. Mark Brown understood what the overall benefits that Taraflex could offer.”

On performance Mark Brown said, “The Taraflex sports floor we specified is definitely meeting our specification and exceeding our expectations. We are extremely pleased with our new sports floor from Gerflor. It looks impressive and is delivering a safer and more comfortable surface for all our students to excel in when participating in sports. We also hire the space out to various badminton, netball and volleyball leagues who are also commenting that the new floor is exceptional and a pleasure to use.”

The installation of the new Taraflex® Evolution sports floor at Langley School would be undertaken by the Solihull based FLR Group. For more than 40 years, FLR Group has been supplying carpets, luxury vinyl and other high quality flooring products to commercial environments across the UK. Though they started small, FLR are now an industry leader. From their state-of-the-art showroom in Solihull, FLR are dedicated to ensuring every customer is given the opportunity to have world class products alongside a superior level of service.

Adam Kaid, Contracts Manager, FLR Group said, “Since our last communication with the client, we know that the Gerflor Taraflex sports flooring is meeting and surpassing expectations. We are really delighted with the end result and would definitely install and if given the opportunity specify Gerflor again.”

In a concluding statement Wayne Andrews said, “Mark Brown was extremely pleased with the initial consultation and the free site survey and follow up. Mark is incredibly delighted with the end result and service Gerflor offered along with FLR Group’s excellent installation.”

Summing up Mark Brown commented, “From start to finish the process was easy and trouble-free. I can’t thank Wayne Andrews enough for his help and specification assistance and to Adam Kaid from FLR for installing the sports floor. We would definitely specify Gerflor’s Taraflex sports flooring again.”

HADO is the world’s first Techno Sport, merging the best of physical sports and esports together to create a high intensity physical sport with the level playing field of a computer game. When the first UK HADO centre in Coventry wanted to create a flagship facility for its players they would, through their flooring supplier, specify Olympic pedigree Taraflex® Evolution vinyl sports flooring in ‘Anthracite’ for their all-important court areas from international flooring and interiors specialists Gerflor. The state-of-the art sport that can be only realised with AR technology, would require a world class indoor sports surface that delivers consistent safety, comfort, and performance for all players of all ages and ability and the facility would thus, only choose the best for their iconic refurbishment.

HADO is a sport that doesn’t rely on an individual’s sheer size or strength to determine victory, instead, it’s all about equal opportunities utilising skills that anyone can develop. HADO is an augmented reality experience combining physical activity and e-sport using a head-mounted display & arm senor that connects you to the game. It is a sport with simple controls that relies on the intuitive movement of players. It’s played in 32 countries with millions joining in, making it a truly global sport.

Jim Sephton, CEO of UK HADO commented, “HADO is an Augmented Reality (AR) sport, so unlike Virtual Reality (VR) where nothing is real, in AR you still see the real world. We just add computer graphics into reality with you, which allows the player to move with speed and confidence in the space. Our UK HADO centre is open Wednesday to Sunday for training, matches, parties, and team building.”

Tom Gidman, Specification Manager for Gerflor in the East Midlands, met with Blueprint Interiors who were doing the design work for the project and based off their requirements, he built a specification for them.

Tom Gidman said “It was a unique project, as the HADO Centre is the first of its kind in the UK. They required a floorcovering that would be safe and suitable to play on, ensuring players had confidence underfoot, as they would be moving around while wearing VR headsets. Taraflex Evolution was specified for both its outstanding performance and striking design. It also provided the good indentation resistance needed for various seating and furniture arrangements, whilst also providing players with the shock absorption and impact protection needed for physical activity.”

Commenting on the Gerflor flooring product and installation Jim Sephton said, “We were looking to create a flagship location for the sport of HADO in the UK and as part of that initiative, we wanted an extremely durable, safe and comfortable, indoor sports surface that would allow our athletes to perform at the best of their abilities. Gerflor’s Taraflex sports flooring provided exactly what we were looking for.”

On usage and activities, Jim Sephton also added, “The court areas are used for training and tournaments, so the Taraflex Evolution sports flooring has a major role to play.”

The installation of the new Taraflex® Evolution sports floor at UK HADO would be undertaken by the Solihull-based FLR Group. For more than 40 years, FLR Group has been supplying carpets, luxury vinyl and other high quality flooring products to commercial environments across the UK. Though they started small, FLR are now an industry leader. From their state-of-the-art showroom in Solihull, FLR are dedicated to ensuring every customer gets world class products and superb service.

Adam Kaid, Contracts Manager, FLR Group said, “The Owner contacted FLR Group for recommendations on sports flooring for the first UK HADO centre and were put through to myself where I booked a site survey.”

On specification Adam Kaid commented, “We specified Gerflor Taraflex Evolution for its high durability, compatibility with line marking and its colour bank suited the HADO centres used throughout Europe. After researching HADO and watching a few videos on how it was played, it was easy to see that Taraflex from Gerflor would be the perfect solution.”

On installation Adam Kaid went on to say, “We had two installers involved. The job was phased, as three courts were required for this centre. Each court was completed over one to two evenings. The Taraflex sports floorcovering is extremely easy to work with and install, our specialist floor fitters have many years of experience with laying Taraflex sports vinyl.”

Tom Gidman finally said, “The feedback from the staff and CEO at HADO has been extremely positive, they are very impressed with how Taraflex has been delivering on both performance and safety. It’s been an incredible project to work on and I’m very satisfied that the client is really pleased with the end result.”

Adam Kaid concluded, “Since our last communication with the client, we know that the Taraflex sports flooring from Gerflor is meeting and surpassing expectations. We are really delighted with the outcome and would definitely specify Gerflor again for sports projects.”

Jim Sephton ended by saying, “The Taraflex sports vinyl flooring is easy to maintain and delivers on the smart look we wanted to achieve for all our court areas. We would definitely specify Gerflor’s Taraflex sports floor coverings again.”

Sport Aberdeen is an award-winning registered charity committed to creating opportunities, inspiring people, and changing lives through sport and physical activity. Established in 2010, the organisation manages sport and physical activity services on behalf of Aberdeen City Council. When the Kincorth sports hall required a world class indoor flooring finish, Gerflor’s Olympic pedigree Taraflex® sports flooring would be the natural choice for this iconic refurbishment. Over 600m2 in Light Cherry would be the specified in a Taraflex® Combi Elastic system that was finished with a Taraflex® Evolution point elastic flooring.

Unique to other leisure providers, every penny made by Sport Aberdeen is reinvested back into the communities it serves. Its mission is simple – to inspire more people across Aberdeen to get active, regardless of age, gender, or ability.

The hall at Get Active @ Kincorth is used for multiple sports and exercise activities. The hall is frequently utilised for basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, and netball, however, other activities including fitness classes are also carried out in it.

Maggie Smith, Scotland Team Leader, Gerflor said, “The project enquiry came through from Euan Beggs at MRT Architects in regard to the refurbishment of the sports hall at Kincorth for Sport Aberdeen. Initially, they were considering a timber cradle and baton system (Area Elastic). After various discussions about the project requirements and the specific need for a solution that would be fit for purpose and within the budget and timescale for this major refurbishment, we proposed an alternative solution. This was to be the Taraflex® Combi Elastic system which is a cradle and baton system finished with Taraflex® Evolution point elastic flooring.”

On specification, Maggie Smith went on to further comment, “The existing sports floor was out of action for many months and a new floor was desperately required. The client, Get Active @ Kincorth specified Gerflor for the sports hall flooring after many discussions over the suitability of the combined system which included the users of different ages and ability, who would play in the facility, the types of activities and sports being played, and the additional benefit Taraflex® offers with Index Protection Index (IPI), which would be ideal for both the younger and elderly users, allowing all ages to enjoy the facility and enhance their experience.”

Maggie Smith also added, “The installation went extremely well, with General & Technical Flooring Services being the appointed contractors, with no hiccups as part of the install.”

At Mackie Ramsay Taylor Architects, they hold a commitment to providing a quality service and strive to create buildings of the highest design quality without compromising on the Client’s finances, building programme, and long-term building management considerations. The practice understands that the success of any project lies in the relationship between the client and architect, and therefore Mackie Ramsay Taylor Architects adopts a collaborative, balanced and integrated approach.

Their experience across all sectors allows them to deliver a high-quality design that not only works and functions for the needs of the building’s occupants but is also respect of the surroundings and creates a flexible, modern environment.

Euan Beggs, Architect at Mackie Taylor Ramsay said,” The project was part of our client’s commitment to continually improve and enhance their sport facility offering within Aberdeen city. Part of this programme was the refurbishment and enhancement of the multi-purpose sport hall within Get Active @ Kincorth, by way of a replacement floor covering and general facility upgrade.”

On flooring specification for the project, Euan Beggs commented, “Gerflor’s Taraflex® sports flooring was chosen as a replacement for the existing sprung timber floor for a number of key reasons. By using Gerflor’s complete system of product, we were able to maintain a sprung floor under build and tie back into the existing finished floor level, which reduced the need to carry out additional work and alterations out with the hall itself. The surface provided the required premium performance required for a multitude of sports, whilst providing the client with a simplified maintenance regime over other alternative floor coverings.”

Further commenting on the installation Euan Beggs said, “The project had one unique challenge, which was to retain and re-use the same sports equipment anchor points. Through ongoing conversations with Gerflor’s Specification team, it was agreed that this was possible. Gerflor recommended what their anchor point covers, which could be installed as part of the overall flooring works. The contractor responsible for the installation of these covers had never installed or heard of this product before. When further discussing this with Gerflor, they helped to guide the installer on how to do this correctly and what specific tools should be used to ensure a perfect circle could be cut through the finished surface. When installed in line with these instructions it finished the surface off both aesthetically and functionally. “

Hugh Black, Group Estates Manager at Sport Aberdeen commented, “The flooring at Get Active @ Kincorth was in dire need of urgent replacement and Sport Aberdeen decided not to go for a like-for-like option and to try something unique and different.” On specification, Hugh Black added, “Gerflor’s Taraflex® sports flooring was installed at Get active @ Kincorth and the main reason was for its characteristic of spongy vinyl, as opposed to a natural timber product which gave Sport Aberdeen an option to compare different types of flooring in terms of its performance for cushioning and protection. “

The installation at Get Active @Kincorth would be the responsibility of Aberdeen-based General and Technical Flooring Services. Since 1994, General & Technical Flooring Services has been built on a firm foundation of commercial flooring expertise. Across all coverings, across all sectors & across all of Scotland, their reputation has also been built on working together with their clients to create a world class facility. Led by their installation team of experts, they deliver the commercial flooring solutions all commercial clients need. From commission to completion, they deliver on time, on budget, and with safety as a top priority.

John Morrison, Managing Director, General & Technical Flooring Services said of the project, “We are a locally based flooring contractor and were contacted by KW Contractors who were in charge of the full refurbishment. The client specified Gerflor’s Taraflex® sports flooring, however, we were also asked our opinion and of course assessed the suitability and quality of the system for the purpose of the refurbishment project.”

On installation John Morrison commented, “We had three fitters installing the sprung support system and then a further two fitters installing the vinyl. It took us two weeks to complete the acoustic hardwood system and then a further week to install and weld the vinyl. Gerflor’s Taraflex® Combi Elastic system is a very good system to work with. The sprung floor is relatively simple to install, and we are very experienced with Gerflor’s Sports vinyl and rubber products.”

Hugh Black added, “Another reason Sport Aberdeen chose Taraflex® sports flooring was down to its enviable reputation – the charity realised that Taraflex® is a widely accepted product for competitive sport at a high and professional level. Although Sport Aberdeen’s venues are primarily for recreational use, the charity was still keen to give Gerflor a try with its indoor sports surface. This is a totally new product for Sport Aberdeen, and it has never had Gerflor flooring installed before at its facility. A diverse range of activities take place on the floor including netball, hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, football, and fitness classes.”

Maggie Smith concluded, “It was my first time specifying a combined elastic system, so I was involved with all the technical side of the project and product, which was very exciting and interesting too. Hugh Black and his team are delighted with the final finish and results. When we visited to have the photographs taken, the facility staff mentioned the youngest user was only nine months old and the oldest was ninety-six years old, which is the best result you could ask for. It’s lovely to see a facility bringing all ages together to enjoy an active lifestyle. I loved working on this project and found it immensely rewarding.”

John Morrison ended by commenting, “The client and building users are all extremely delighted. The feedback from all stakeholders has been excellent. We are a partner of Gerflor, regularly supporting each other with specifications and we value the partnership along with their high quality and credible products. It was a legendary project to be involved with for our outstanding clients and revolutionary products to install. The end result has been welcomed by all and is a good testimony for other similar sports facilities of what can be achieved to transform their spaces but also to future proof their building interiors for many years to come and make them fit for the twenty first century for the different types of uses these buildings now have.”

Euan Beggs concluded, “Overall I believe that the finished floor build-up and the Taraflex® sports surface itself satisfies the clients performance requirements, and that was the key aim for the product specification. Going forward, I am confident that the indoor sports surface will stand the test of time and will continue to provide a high-quality playing surface for a number of years to come. Based on the technical knowledge and guidance received from Gerflor and its Specification team through the design and install process for this project, and the product itself, I would have no issue with specifying Gerflor’s Taraflex® products in the future.”

Hugh Black ended by saying, “Sport Aberdeen is delighted with the final result. It has received exceptional feedback so far from customers, members, and sports club users alike, all noting that the floor has a softer under foot feeling. We would definitely choose Gerflor Taraflex® sports products again. Specifying Gerflor flooring, also ensures a much quicker installation process which is also an added bonus and the after sales services from Gerflor has also been really excellent.”

Specifying and installing 650m2 of Gerflor’s world class Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring in ‘Light Cherry’ would turn out to be a pivotal decision for Axminster Leisure Centre in East Devon. The refurbishment project to replace the existing flooring in their main sports hall would yield spectacular results for both the operators of the facility and the end users. The indoor sports surface solution that was specified would need to be of the utmost quality and readily available, considering how short the timescales were for the project and would need to be competitively priced for the funds available for this iconic renovation.

Chris Pursey, Gerflor Area Sales Manager at the time, Southwest & Channel Islands commented, “Leisure East Devon (LED) runs a number of similar sites for East Devon Council, and they have specified Taraflex® on other sites, so they had full confidence in our systems.”

The installation of the Gerflor Taraflex® Performance flooring by Plymouth-based Roberts Flooring would need to be of the highest quality to meet the exacting standards set by East Devon Council.

Dave Moran, Managing Director, Roberts Flooring said, “Although this project already had Gerflor specified, we have carried out several sports floor installations using Gerflor products, one of which included Torquay Grammar School for Boys, this project had both Roberts Flooring and Gerflor nominated in the CFJ Flooring Awards in 2020. I believe that the client and end users are overjoyed with the new Gerflor Taraflex® sports floor.”

Steve Parker, Area Building Surveyor, East Devon District Council said, “The new Taraflex floor is ‘outstanding and first class’ and much nicer than they had before. At East Devon District Council, we are extremely pleased with the new Olympic pedigree Taraflex® sports flooring.”

Taraflex® Performance is a synthetic indoor sports flooring that can be specified for a wide range of sports applications, in a variety of sectors.
When the idyllic village of Tormarton nestled in the Cotswolds wanted to transform the main room in their village hall the committee responsible for organising and specifying a replacement floor...

When the idyllic village of Tormarton nestled in the Cotswolds wanted to transform the main room in their village hall the committee responsible for organising and specifying a replacement floor would choose Taraflex Multi-Use from international flooring specialist Gerflor. The project would use 150m2 of this world class vinyl sports flooring in ‘Wood Natural’ creating a striking visual addition to the hall, whilst at the same time providing safety, durability, and performance for its users. The added bonus in specifying Gerflor’s Taraflex Multi-Use would be their ability to now use the main hall for a host of other non-sporting activities.

Tormarton has a population of about 350 people from a wide variety of backgrounds. The village is a very historic place, it roots lying in agriculture. At the centre of village life is the parish hall which provides a blank canvass for a raft of local community activities.

Stewart Waters, Chair of the Tormarton Parish Council commented, “The original tiles had been in place since the mid nineteen seventies and were stained and appeared dirty. The hall is used for a variety of uses including children’s nursery, social events, and badminton. There had been comments regarding the floor being cold and unsuitable for these uses.” Stewart Waters also added, “We specified Gerflor Taraflex Multi Use flooring as it would cater for a mix of uses. The new Taraflex floor is much cleaner and brighter than the old tiles.”

Commenting on the project Chris Pursey, Gerflor Area Sales Manager, Southwest & Channel Islands said,” The project initially came from an introduction by Biddle Sport who were consulted originally regarding line marking. The existing subfloor consisted of old vinyl tiles, which although were well bonded to the substrate, presented a health and safety risk if removed due to possible presence of asbestos.” Chris Pursey added, “For this reason we specified that the installation should ideally be over an Isolsport membrane which left the tiles undisturbed and also enabled the installation to be done quickly with minimal floor preparation.” r

Mark Biddle. Managing Director, Biddle Sport said, “We did recommend that the hall committee in particular Stewart Waters, the Chairman should consider replacing the Parish’s Hall existing floor with Taraflex Multi-Use to provide them with a low maintenance sports floor that looks like wood and can cope with the future multi-purpose use from nursery to meetings and everything in between.” Mark Biddle added, “It’s important that the maintenance cost for them going forwards is minimal and the Taraflex product with its research and development in foam backing and surface coatings offers a durable product that will age well and cope with all their needs.”

On specification Mark Biddle commented, “We put Stewart Waters in touch with Chris Pursey from Gerflor who sent samples, recommended a few flooring contractors to price for installation and kept in touch throughout the whole process from specification to installation. Gerflor are also always there to offer follow-up advice and answer any maintenance questions.”

On the actual installation Mark Biddle further commented, “We prepared a court layout drawing for the committee to agree, we then cleaned and rinsed the floor with our Rotowash machinery prior to court marking with the recommended Taraflex TLD Aqua paint. Our work was done in about four hours, but to the same standard as a multi-million-pound new sports centre.”

Mark Biddle ended by saying, “Stewart Waters’ time and effort in researching and choosing the right floor will serve the Parish Hall well.”

In conclusion Chris Pursey said, “The feedback from the specifyin committee and nursery has been really excellent as the children have a much more comfortable floor to sit and play on.”

Stewart Waters ended by saying, “We have had lots of positive comments and all parties are really pleased with the new flooring. We would definitely choose Gerflor flooring again.”

When Collegiate School in Bristol wanted to refurbish their main sports hall, together with revamping the stairs, showers and changing rooms they would specify a mix of high-quality flooring from international flooring specialist Gerflor. The specification would include Gerflor’s Olympic pedigree Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring and their world-class Tarasafe Ultra and Tarasafe Ultra H20 safety flooring.

Collegiate has an impressive sporting legacy, unsurprising given their outstanding on-site sports facilities that are truly unique to Bristol. Their strong sporting tradition is at the heart of everyday school life, encouraging everyone regardless of age and sporting ability to get more involved in physical education. It is a strongly held belief that exercise, and playing sports is important to maintain a healthy mind and it also allows each pupil to develop self-esteem and a strong team spirit. Their main sports hall has a multi-purpose goal and can be set up to provide badminton courts, cricket nets, a netball court, volleyball courts, a basketball court or five a side football pitch. In addition to this, the entire hall can be used for martial arts, dance classes or other similar classes.

Choosing the highest quality indoor sports replacement floor would be paramount to the ongoing success of their main sports hall facility. The changing rooms and showering areas in many educational locations can often be wet and slippery environments and this is where the Tarasafe Ultra and Tarasafe Ultra H20 safety collections were the ideal solutions for Collegiate School.

The Tarasafe products would also provide the perfect choice for the school’s stairs offering pupils, staff and visitors the required safety and comfort needed at the education establishment. Commenting on the instigation of the project Simon Crossman, Director of Facilities, Collegiate said, “The sports hall was nearly forty years old and the cost to build a new hall was too expensive, therefore a full refurbishment was chosen.” Simon Crossman went on to add, “Originally the refurb was to concentrate on the lights, ventilation and heating and hot water and replace the floor. On M&E refurb projects, it can be hard to see where the money has been spent, consequently the floor was to be a key visual sign for the parents that we had refurbished the hall.”

On specification Simon Crossman went on to further comment, “We wanted a bright multi-sport surface and a surface which could cope with ad-hoc school activities such as assemblies, prizegivings and summer/leavers balls. Therefore, the floor had to be resilient, take the point loading of a high heel or a chair and not dent or deform in any way which could affect the playing surface. Another requirement was to have an indoor cricket area which didn’t involve laying additional mats. The Taraflex® indoor sports solution delivers this specification in spades.”

Chris Pursey, Gerflor Area Sales Manager, Southwest & Channel Islands commented, “The collection of Gerflor ranges used on this project were specified by Quattro Design Architects, who chose Taraflex® in colour Lagoon for the main playing area with a run-off border in Gold which looks very striking. The specifier only wanted the best-in-class solution for the facility, and it needed to meet the various requirements for the end user”.

The installation of the Gerflor products would have to be of the highest standard to meet the rigorous specification requirements and would be the responsibility of Bristol-based Knighton Contracts. Knighton Contracts are specialist in commercial flooring providing solutions to many of the UK’s leading construction contractors, providing a reliable, trustworthy, and efficient flooring service for a host of projects for over forty years. Lee Knighton, Director commented, “The project initially came to us from the contractors KP Wilton with the specification coming from Quattro Design.”

On installation, Lee Knighton said, “We had absolutely no problems laying down the Gerflor Taraflex® and Tarasafe products and everybody seemed extremely delighted with the final finish of the new flooring installed.” Commenting on the performance of the new flooring Simon Crossman also added, “The floor has now been down for over a year and is the significant wow factor in this critical refurbishment. The parents and visitors all comment on how remarkable it looks. We have also had great support in understanding how to remove cricket ball marks from the floor. Chris Pursey, from Gerflor, has been really helpful in providing technical support and sourcing the correct cleaning products to help maintain the high quality appearance of the floor.”

Lee Knighton finally said, “We would definitely choose to specify and install Gerflor products again. The new Gerflor sports surface and safety flooring looks really superb. We also found that Gerflor provided high quality assistance right throughout the project. From enquiry through to delivery, their Area Specification Manager ‘Chris Pursey’ provided outstanding levels of customer service and technical and specification advice.”

On final outcomes Chris Pursey added, “The client is incredibly happy with the final finish and performance of their new Taraflex® sports floor, particularly as the hall is used regularly for indoor cricket. It’s been a rewarding project to be involved in, as we were able to supply the total flooring solutions they were seeking.”

In conclusion Simon Crossman said, “The whole project has been a fantastic success with the floor being the most visual part. Eye catching and dramatic has been the final result.” Taraflex® indoor sports surfaces overview Taraflex® Performance easily meets the rigorous demands of vast array of sports activities providing excellent co-efficient of friction, this means twists, turns, stops/starts can be carried out without fear of slipping or gripping and subsequent injuries. The shock absorption qualities of Taraflex® Performance also helps players gain even more enjoyment from sport.

With a complete range of shock absorption P1/P2/P3, Taraflex® sports floorings from Gerflor provide the right solution every time and optimal safety for users. The combination of D-Max™/D-Max™+, CXP™HD foam ensures that Taraflex® sports floorings are durable and high-performing. Taraflex® also meets the EN 14904 Standard which is the minimum performance requirements to be met by indoor sports floors.

Its objective is to draw attention to the necessity of installing safe, comfortable floors that reduce the risk of injuries. Taraflex® technology delivers long-lasting high-performance of the products for the lifetime of the floors…a massive boon when long-term planning and budgeting are perceived as being two key considerations for specifiers.

Taraflex® sports flooring has been fitted at every Olympic Games since 1976. Approved by many National and International governing bodies as a world class sports surface, it is also widely installed within the education, community, leisure, health, and fitness sectors. Taraflex® is ideal for new build projects and refurbishments and is extremely durable and cost effective to maintain.

Over 6 million children everyday enjoy the benefits of Taraflex® sports flooring as it delivers a versatile range that can be used for various multi-specialist applications. Taraflex® Performance is available in 17 colours and 3 wood-effect designs as standard with an addition of 110 solid colour options available. It offers a P2 category shock absorbency of 35% to 45% and is also treated with the Triple Action Protecsol® surface treatment so that no polish is ever required for the lifetime of the floor.

Tarasafe safety flooring overview Intended for traditional barefoot spaces where there are continuous wet areas, Tarasafe Ultra H20 also offers a shod solution, providing a perfect blend of flooring applications for those areas where wet flooring conditions can be an issue. Within Gerflor’s other top performing Tarasafe vinyl safety flooring range there are over 80 finishes available to choose from.

They are reinforced with a glass fibre grid and are suitable for use in all areas of heavy traffic where slip-resistance, durability and hygienic conditions are required. Using mineral crystal particles, rather than carborundum, Tarasafe, with its improved performance, is easier to install, lighter and more flexible to handle. The range has a maximum hygiene rating meeting the EN Standard 22196 for anti- bacterial activity (E. coli – S. aureus – MRSA) (3) returning >99% levels of growth inhibition and comes with a 12-year warranty and is also 100% recyclable.

The Tarasafe Standard range comes with the unique UV cured PUR surface treatment and their Tarasafe Ultra range (excluding their Tarasafe Ultra H20 offer) also sees a benefit from the SparClean® surface treatment, therefore no polish for life.
