When Whitmore High School in Barry, Wales were undergoing a massive £30.5M transformation that required over 6000m2 of new flooring they turned to international flooring specialist Gerflor for their specific project needs. Gerflor would supply a range of their world class products to meet the extremely high specifications that the contractor and school would demand. The contractor for the project would specify a mix of Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Compact and Comfort flooring, together with their pedigree Taraflex® sports flooring, alongside their world renowned Tarasafe flooring products.
Accommodating 1,100 pupils, the work, conducted by Morgan Sindall Construction, has created an ultra-modern learning environment with state-of-the-art facilities.
The vast range of flooring products that Gerflor supplied covered a large area of the school’s daily activities comprising of the communal areas, classrooms, and the sports element of the project, which also included the main sports hall. The school’s computer server room also benefited from Gerflor’s Mipolam ESD EL7 dissipative flooring which ensures the protection of electronic equipment, components, the protection of people against electro-static discharge risks, together with the protection of premises against explosive risks.
The installation of such prestigious and large flooring project would be the responsibility of CS Flooring, Cardiff. Sport can play a huge part in student life. With a complete range of shock absorption P1/P2/P3, Taraflex® sports floors from Gerflor provides the right solution every time whether for exercise or play and has been used by the largest international sports federations for decades. Taraflex® is treated with Protecsol®, which renders polish redundant and is triple action meaning no polish is ever required, it contributes to easy maintenance and is anti-friction burn and slide/grip.
Tarasafe is a range of slip resistant sheet flooring that meets HSE guidelines. It is constructed from vinyl with deeply inlaid mineral crystal particles (patent pending) and coloured chips for a decorative design. Contains no Carborundum. Tarasafe Standard PUR is reinforced with a glass fibre grid and is suitable for use in all areas of heavy traffic where slip-resistance, durability and hygienic conditions are required.
It is also treated with an anti-bacterial and fungicidal treatment. This product comes with a 12-year warranty and is 100% recyclable, when the product is at the end of its’ life. The Tarasafe Standard range comes with the unique UV cured PUR surface treatment and their Tarasafe Ultra range (excluding their Tarasafe Ultra H20 offer) also sees a benefit from the SparClean® surface treatment, therefore no polish for life.
Taralay Impression Comfort from Gerflor comprises a Very High Density (VHD) foam backing reinforced with a glass fibre grid and a printed design that is protected by a transparent wear layer (0.65 mm thick) which offers 19 dB sound insulation and an indentation resistance of 0.11 mm. The product is protected by a UV cured surface treatment Protecsol® 2 which is easy to maintain and permanently eliminates the need of an acrylic emulsion (metallisation). It does not contain any heavy metals or CMR 1&2 and it is 100% compliant with REACH. The product emission rate of volatile organic compounds is < 70 µg/m3 (TVOC after 28 days – ISO 16000 -6). It is also 100% recyclable. This flooring is suitable for medium to high traffic areas including hospitals, schools, commercial and public areas. For designers, the range offers 160 references and includes 21 wood effect references, covering the spectrum of wood colours in 10 stunning designs.
The Taralay Impression Compact range is ideal for heavy traffic areas with a 0.70mm PVC wear layer. This vinyl flooring is safe and reliable with an improved R10 slip resistance.
Treated with Protecsol® 2 surface treatment to ensure no polish for the entire lifetime of the product. The Taralay Impression Compact collection also delivers a range of eye-catching innovative designs in a wide array of stunning colour choices.
Mipolam ESD-EL7 Robust also specified for the Whitmore High School installation is a permanent dissipative flooring => 10^6 < R < 10^9 providing a palette of 9 directional design available in rolls and tiles and delivers TVOC after 28 days < 10µg/m3 => indoor air quality. Mipolam ESD EL7 flooring guarantees the highest level of protection against ESD risk due to their low generation of charges which was a crucial element of the school’s specification when it came to their all-important server room for the school’s computers.
